The new Demon Slayer movie just broke a record in Japan. Here is everything you need to know.

As a fan of anime, it is always wholesome to hear when an anime breaks records in ratings and viewership. With the source of media skyrocketing in popularity, many have been jumping on the wave of anime. One anime, Demon Slayer, which has been around since 2019, just broke a box office record in Japan.

Demon Slayer movie reaches 10 billion yen in box office sales in Japan

On July 18, 2025, Demon Slayer released the first of the Infinity Castle arc, which tells the ending of the legendary anime that is Demon Slayer. The arc is being split into three movies and will be periodically released over the next few years.

The new movie, titled "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle – Part 1: Akaza Returns," takes place directly after the events of season four, which concluded around a year ago.

The movie immediately made close to 2 billion yen (around $13 million USD) and has since then been dominating the box office in Japan. In fact, not only was the movie number one two weekends in a row, but it is also the first movie in Japan to ever hit 10 billion yen as fast as it did.

10 billion yen is equivalent to a little over $67 million, making the movie a huge success. What's even crazier is that this is only in Japan, as the film releases in the US and Canada on September 12, 2025.

Are anime films making a comeback?

Aside from Studio Ghibli, we do not see many anime movies hit theaters these days. However, it would seem as if more and more are starting to hop on the theatrical release train.

Anime such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan and Tokyo Ghoul have recently combined multiple episodes to make films out of them, showcasing the movies in theaters across the world.

The crazy part? Every single one did wild numbers at the box office.

This is a huge foresight into the future of anime, with many shows finding ways to put some of their content into theaters. Demon Slayer, however, is one of the first to have a full movie release for the show instead of it just being episodes compiled into one film.
