The radical changes to Black King Bar and spell immunity may have empowered Muerta into one of the strongest carries in Dota 2 right now.

Are you seeing more Muerta pickers than ever in your Dota 2 games? Do you get the feeling that she is a little overpowered? You are not alone! Because patch 7.33 has done something that made her incredibly strong. One thing is for sure; she is now a bona fide carry hero. Supports, you've been warned.

Some quick Muerta Dota 2 stats

Before we dive down and find out what is making her unstoppable, take a look at the following statistics on Muerta throughout the past month courtesy of Dotabuff (data per April 23).

  • In the past month since March 24, her win rate hovered around 51 to 52 percent
  • Muerta's win rate rose considerably after Dota 2 patch 7.33 up to 54 percent
  • Her pick rate jumped from 13 to 17 percent right after the patch

The change that made her strong

There are two massive changes in Dota 2 patch 7.33 that gave rise to Muerta's strength; The rework on spell immunity and Black King Bar (BKB). Spell immunity literally ceased to exist in this patch, and has changed to debuff immunity instead. To put it simply, there is nothing that can stop magical damage. For example, previously when Juggernaut spins, he is immune to any form of magic and cannot be stunned, slowed or damaged. Now, however, when a Crystal Maiden casts Frostbite to him while he spins, he still incurs magic damage but just not rooted. This is what debuff immunity means, which brings us to BKB.

Before, BKB's active skill "Avatar" is an ability that provides spell immunity. Since spell immunity is no longer a thing, it now provides 50 percent magic resistance and debuff immunity instead. So what does that have to do with Muerta?

Nothing to stop Muerta's "Pierce The Veil"

What is the holy grail of all core players? You buy BKB. Prior to patch 7.33, BKB renders Muerta's ultimate "Pierce The Veil" completely useless because that ability is spell-based and does magic damage. However, that is no longer the case. Now her ultimate will literally pierce through no matter what. Sure, a BKB will still reduce some damage, but that will not stop a completely farmed out Muerta. Take a look at the demonstration below.

Apart from that, Muerta also has Aghanim's Shard and Scepter upgrades now thanks to Dota 2 patch 7.33. Her Scepter gives her a new skill "Parting Shot" that stuns for four seconds. Meanwhile, her Shard grants her 30 percent lifesteal when using Pierce The Veil. More importantly, she gains two percent magic amplification permanently for every enemy she kills, or when an enemy hero dies within 925 range during her ultimate. Completely broken.
