Lima Major 2023: Most Popular Heroes cover image

The Lima Major concluded with Gaimin Gladiators winning the first Major of DPC 2023.

The Lima Major concluded with Gaimin Gladiators winning the first Major of DPC 2023. They defeated Team Liquid in the grand finals of the first-ever South American Major in straight games with a score of 3-0.

Although Gaimin Gladiators won the Lima Major Grand Finals, Team Liquid was playing without Samuel “Boxi” Svahn, as the latter had to fly home due to a medical emergency.

Nonetheless, the event came to a fruitful end for Gaimin as they clinched their first-ever Dota 2 Major. Let’s take a look at the most popular Heroes picked during the event.

Bow down to the most popular pick of the Lima Major – Rubick. Rubick had a pick rate of 49% as he was the preferred pick for teams across all regions. He featured in almost every game as a staple position four.

However, his win rate is less than the pick rate as compared to other Heroes in the list, averaging at around 44%. The lower win rate can be attributed to teams countering the Hero with more aggressive picks in the core roles.

Rubick failed against high burst damage Heroes like Morphling, Pangolier, Tiny, etc. owing to its squishy nature. However, Rubick is a Hero that can disrupt teamfights and the Lima Major meta clearly had a preference for the spell thief.

Undying

Dirge, as he’s fondly known, is an annoying Hero to play against. All his spells are a pain to fare against since every spell deals heavy damage.

Undying has majorly been played as a support, helping his cores to settle down in the laning phase, being more than impressive in team fights with Tombstone as well as healing his teammates with Soul Rip, and slowing down the enemy with his ultimate skill Flesh Golem.

Undying clocked a 44% pick rate and a 54% win rate – an impressive feat in itself.

Besides being a support, Undying was also used as a semi-utility Hero, coming in handy for teams who knew how to play him best. The strong laning phase coupled with extensive teamfighting ability made Undying one of the most popular Heroes at the Lima Major. Gaimin Gladiators also picked Undying in the final game of the series as its Soul Rip synergized perfectly with their Witch Doctor / IO heal strat.

Treant Protector

Speaking of Heroes that can heal allies, Treant Protector was undoubtedly going to be one of the most picked Heroes of the tournament. Treant Protector also provides extensive control in teamfights including an ultimate that goes through BKB.

Averaging a 54% win rate as compared to a 43% pick rate, Treant has been instrumental in setting up team fights as well as strong base defense.

Adept at healing allies as well as allied units, teams defend their towers and heal them back up to full. So if your enemy does not complete taking an objective after a fight, treant can simply heal your buildings. Additionally, granting bonus armor also came in handy during teamfights - another element that made the Strength Hero appealing to teams at the Lima Major.

Manoeuvering effortlessly through trees without any obstacles, his ultimate, Overgrowth, rooted enemies in one place, rendering them motionless. Moreover, the ultimate pierces through Black King Bar, thus making Treant Protector a feared pick. Treant Protector was picked in all three games of the Grand Finals. In fact, the Hero has been present in all but two Lima Major playoffs matches.

Tiny

Despite the subsequent nerfs over the last few patches, Tiny still makes the cuts as one of the most popular Heroes. He provides value in any strategy, primarily for two reasons – the bigger he grows, the stronger he gets.

It is incredibly difficult to kill Tiny as he has a natural inbuilt defence mechanism, granting him additional strength and high base damage.

Tiny’s Avalanche + Toss combo is a sure-shot death to squishy Heroes. This is true specially for poor supports, that can effectively lead to a handicap situation during team fights.

As a core, Tiny can farm effectively owing to Tree Grab/Tree Throw which provides cleave effects. As the game progresses, Tiny grows into a behemoth owing to his passive ability – Grow . This ability increases his attack damage, armour, and toss power while slowing his attack speed.

Averaging a 58% win rate against a 38% pick rate, it was undoubtedly a no-brainer pick at the Lima Major.

Nature's Prophet

Nature's Prophet brings versatility, initially as a push Hero, but one that can easily transition to a hard-hitting carry hero in the late game. A big reason for this is the hero's ability to farm all over the map. With an in-built teleportation and decent Agility gain, Nature's Prophet has been one of the favorites at the Lima Major. He averaged a 53% win rate against a 37% pick rate.

His versatility to adept in almost every draft made him a preferred pick that went a long way for teams, especially Team Liquid. However, the Major Champions, Gaimin Gladiators didn’t prefer the Hero as much as other teams did.
