Some massive changes to the camo grind have been added to Black Ops 7.

The multiplayer reveal trailer and blog post for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 were both released just a week before COD Next, and nearly the entirety of multiplayer is now out in the open. We've seen details on just about every corner of the mode, including most of the weapons, all of the maps, and every loadout item you can equip. However, we've also learned about some of the progression coming to Black Ops 7, including details on the weapon camo grind.

Camo grinding has become a staple of Call of Duty, as players can spend dozens of hours leveling up every weapon, completing challenges, and earning camos to eventually unlock Mastery Camos for every weapon in multiplayer. While weapon camos are back and better than ever in Black Ops 7, the multiplayer reveal outlined some huge changes to the process that will save me and every other camo grinder hours of playtime.

The entire weapon camo process is fully outlined in the multiplayer reveal blog post on Activision's website if you want to take a look for yourself. For the most part, though, we can expect a very similar process to the camo grind in Black Ops 6.

Weapons have military camos that players earn by getting headshots/kills with a weapon, then there are special camos that require specific challenges, and finally, Mastery Camos can be earned with more distinct challenges for their weapon category. Regular and Mastery Camos are available in multiplayer, Zombies, Warzone, and, for the first time ever in COD, Campaign.

In addition to the new Campaign camo grind, Black Ops 7 is also introducing a number of changes to the core camo grind. The highlight of these changes is that the military camos for every weapon only require 80 headshots instead of the standard 100. This is coincided by only having nine military camos that follow a more sensible unlock path, which is as follows:

  • 5 headshots / 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80

So at every 10-headshot interval beyond the first two military camos, you'll earn a new camo. Once you earn 80 headshots, you can move on to the special camos, and there are three of those for each weapon in Black Ops 7. After completing the special camos, you can acquire the four Mastery Camos (which we still don't know yet).

In Black Ops 6, players are required to earn 100 total headshots to unlock each military camo, so Black Ops 7 requires players to earn 20 fewer headshots. It might not sound like a big deal, but multiplayer features over 30 weapons, so that's nearly 600 fewer headshots to get in total.

However, another major change that Black Ops 7 is making is in regards to headshots themselves. For the military camos, both shotguns and sniper rifles won't require headshots as they do in Black Ops 6. Instead, you have to get 80 point blank kills for shotguns and 80 one-shot kills for snipers to earn all the military camos for the weapons in those categories.

This is a massive quality-of-life change for the camo grind, as getting headshots for snipers was a true pain, and some shotguns, like semi-auto ones, make it very difficult to earn consistent headshots. So now in Black Ops 7, you can play to those weapons' strengths when going for camos.

The change for shotguns and snipers, paired with requiring fewer headshots/kills for every military camo, should make the camo grind in Black Ops 7 much more feasible. It will still be extremely time-consuming to earn every camo in the game to fully unlock the Mastery Camo for all weapons, but at least now the grind makes more sense. No longer do you have to lose your sanity over trying to get headshots with snipers; instead, you can hop into a Hardcore Domination and get 80 regular kills to be done with the sniper rifle military camos.

In addition to these major changes, Treyarch also revealed that all camos earned for weapons are universal, meaning they can be applied to any weapon once you unlock one. This also applies to the secret camos earned through the Weapon Prestige system in Black Ops 7, which you can read about in our previous guide.
