Swedish Gambling Authority fined Kanon Gaming for over $500,000

They went from SEK 7M to 4.8M, which is around USD 510,000. Still, it’s the biggest sanction Kanon Gaming received this year.

It’s been a rough year for Kanon Gaming, an online casino company operating in Malta. The Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s Gambling Authority, fined the company more than SEK 7M (~USD 743,000) back in June 2025. However, the final sanction was settled at SEK 4.8M (~USD 510,000).

The iGaming company failed in its duty of care responsibilities, but the fine was reduced thanks to its cooperation during the investigation process. Spelinspektionen’s official announcement stated that “the fee should be high due to the shortcomings in the company’s work with responsible gaming and the length of time the shortcomings have lasted.”

Verdict: Warning and penalty fee for Kanon Gaming Limited. The Administrative Court agrees with the Swedish Gambling Authority's assessment regarding deficiencies in the duty of care.

Translation of Spelinspektionen's official communication

What obligation did Kanon Gaming fail to fulfill?

The “duty of care responsibilities” are a series of actions every iGaming company must follow to ensure that players showing signs of gambling problems receive immediate help.

Back in June, the Swedish Gambling Authority also accused Kanon Gaming of failing to correctly identify age groups. This meant the company treated users over the age of 24 the same way as those over 18. For Spelinspektionen, this is a major issue, since younger players are more likely to develop gambling-related addictions.

However, Spelinspektionen acknowledged that Kanon Gaming quickly addressed its concerns and acted accordingly. Their cooperation also reduced the time between supervision and decision, leading to a lower sanction fee.

Other examples of sanctions for failing duty of care

Spelinspektionen has been reinforcing this law, particularly to protect younger players. The authority also sanctioned Newera Frozen PTE Limited and Aprodi Limited for promoting gambling services through streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch by advertising user-generated content. This raises concerns about blurring the line between gaming and gambling.

Other companies affected by these measures include Gamevio Ltd, Bigskin Trading, Samilland.co, and Santeda International.

Some of the sanctioned sites operated by Kanon Gaming are:

  • casinoepic.se
  • casinogami.se
  • frejacasino.se
  • lokecasino.se

While iGaming continues to grow and become more engaging for users, it must also be done responsibly. As gambling sites create more attractive gaming experiences for younger audiences, the line between gaming and gambling must remain clear.
