A dream start for the ALGS Qualifiers.

All-French roster Infinite made a dream start to the ALGS Pro League, beating out several big names to take first place in the first matches of ALGS Year 5. The team qualified through winning the second Preseason Qualifier and have immediately staked their credentials as a team to watch this split.

This was a day of firsts for the ALGS, with E-District featuring in the Pro League for the first time and several new look teams making their ALGS debut. We also saw the introduction of Legend Bans to the ALGS, again for the first time.

Infinite take surprise win in first ALGS Pro League day

Ye Qiu, Kizaron and Vooshii all have ALGS experience, but had to book their spot in the Pro League the hard way, coming through Qualifiers. With eyes on some of the regions biggest names, like Alliance and NAVI they flew somewhat under the radar today.

Infinite showed great consistency today, making the top two in four of the six matches. With so many variables to contend with, a new map, Legend Bans and new competition this is a really impressive performance.

Vooshi changed Legend every match today, adapting to each of the Legend bans as they filtered in. Flexibility is crucial in Year 5 and finding consistent results with a variety of Legends is a great sign for this team moving forward.

Infinite were closely followed by a fellow qualifier team in Ronin. This could be a sign that some of the Year 5 changes are shaking things up and could make this years competition a bit more open to teams to break through some of the most established names.

There is a long way to go before anyone can get too excited about this teams chances at making the ALGS Midseason Playoffs. However, it does not get better than an opening day win.

Todays Pro League top five:

  • Infinite - 71
  • Ronin - 58
  • Alliance - 55
  • NAVI - 48
  • Forbidden Gaming - 45

Legend Bans make debut

This was the first ever ALGS Pro League series played with the brand new Legend Ban system in effect. Things did go largely as expected, with the first few bans resembling what we have often see in scrims. First out was Ash, who is one of the strongest Legends in the game at the moment.

Interestingly, some teams opted for Legend compositions that included Legends unlikely to be banned. This included a handful of teams on Wattson or Crypto. If teams choose to go for lesser used Legends in order to remain consistent across a series will be an interesting dynamic to watch over the next few weeks of Pro League.

Here are todays, and the first ever, Legend bans:

  • Ash (Game 2)
  • Wraith (Game 3)
  • Catalyst (Game 4)
  • Alter (Game 5)
  • Newcastle (Game 6)
