The Mastery Rank is an important feature in The First Descendant, as leveling it provides massive power increases. Of course, there are a lot of categories you can level up in the game, but this one might be the most valuable to your combat efforts.

When you open your inventory menu, you can see a list of options to choose from. There's your character level, components to apply, and your weapon slots. In the midst of all that is the Mastery Rank level, that may say Rank Up Available.

If it does have that message, you'll probably feel the urge to click it. Doing so simply shows you the different Mastery Rank benefits as you progress through them. It doesn't actually let you level up.

So, to level up your Mastery Rank in The First Descendant, follow these steps:

  1. Do missions and complete objectives until the Rank Up Available message is shown for your Mastery Rank
  2. Return to Albion if you are not there already
  3. Go to the Arche Factor Manipulator on the East side of the hub
  4. Interact with the machine there to activate Prime Hands
  5. Select Mastery Rank up and then select it again with the required conditions met

A fun cutscene will play where your chosen Descendant enters the Prime Hands. It closes on them and when the process is done, they come out feeling much more powerful. That is because you leveled up their Mastery Rank in The First Descendant.
