The studio behind one of the biggest games of 2024.

In a year chock-full of massive and well-received video games, Stellar Blade stands out from the crowd. The PlayStation 5-exclusive action-adventure game was released in April 2024 and immediately received praise from fans and critics alike.

While some fans might like Stellar Blade for reasons other than gameplay, the game appealed to a wide range of players. From tremendous graphics to addicting boss fights that are fairly challenging, Stellar Blade has something for everyone. However, despite the game's success, many fans are curious about the developer behind Stellar Blade.

Who is the developer of Stellar Blade?

The developer of Stellar Blade is a South Korean studio named SHIFT UP. While Sony Interactive Entertainment, the makers of the PlayStation, published Stellar Blade, it didn't have anything to do with the core gameplay. That is all SHIFT UP, a studio that was founded in 2013 by a man named Kim Hung Tae.

However, at the start of the studio's life, it didn't develop full-on titles like Stellar Blade. Instead, SHIFT UP designed mobile games for South Korean players. That all stopped when the studio began its first major project in 2019, Stellar Blade.

It was originally titled "Project Eve" internally, referencing the game's main character. As the years passed, SHIFT UP revealed more and more about the project, eventually working with Sony to develop it as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. By 2022, Project Eve was given its true name and the hype train began as more gameplay footage was revealed to the public.

Does SHIFT UP develop any other games?

At the moment, Stellar Blade is SHIFT UP's primary focus, even after its April 2024 launch. The studio has stated that it would like to try and develop a PC port for the game and possibly start work on a sequel, but those decisions haven't been finalized yet.

Aside from Stellar Blade, SHIFT UP is currently in the development process of a new AAA game codenamed "Project Witches." The project is said to be a cross-platform game that will come to mobile, PC, and console. The studio confirmed this and the possibility of a PC port/sequel back in the summer of 2024.

Prior to Stellar Blade, however, SHIFT UP delivered a hit mobile title called "Goddess of Victory: Nikke." Similar to Stellar Blade, Goddess of Victory: Nikke is a third-person action RPG set in a science-fiction world. If you like Stellar Blade, chances are you'll like Nikke as well.

Hopefully, if SHIFT UP does deliver any more games in the future, it'll be able to live up to the massive success that Stellar Blade turned out to be.
