When did Rainbow Six Siege come out?

Rainbow Six Siege was released on December 1, 2015. The game’s initial release was for PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4.

Ubisoft released the game on the next-gen consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S) nearly five years later on December 1, 2020. The game was also released on Amazon Luna in January 2022.

But Rainbow Six Siege was not the first game to be planned. Ubisoft had initially planned and even announced a different game – Rainbow Six Patriots. Patriots was announced in 2011 and the game released with a focus on narrative and storytelling. There were cutscenes throughout the game.

However, shortly after release, players experienced an abundance of bugs. There was also leadership and more importantly, outside factors that impacted their decision to abandon Patriots.

"The main decision was some months after Patriots was announced in 2011 that was the first moment we knew the first generation of new consoles were coming.”

While Patriots had a single-player focus, Siege was built for multiplayer. There was the wall-breaking mechanism introduced in R6 Siege that was unique to the game. Ubisoft had initially named Rainbow Six Siege as Rainbow Six Unbreakable. A lot of the fans would agree, Rainbow Six Siege sounds much better than Unbreakable.

So it was a case of unfortunate timing for Ubisoft. But their decision to cancel Patriots and work on a new game – Rainbow Six Siege – that will be compatible with the latest consoles paid off. Today, Rainbow Six Siege is one of top-selling games on Steam and often draws in thousands of players on a regular basis.
