Power Spots are appearing all over the map in Pokémon GO, but what are they?

Power Spots have started appearing on the map in Pokémon GO. This is a prelude to Max Battles, which will introduce Dynamax to Pokémon GO.

But, what are these new spots on the map, what can you do with them and when will you be able to battle Dynamax Pokémon in Pokémon GO?

How do Power Spots work in Pokémon GO?

Power Spots are appearing in local areas after September 4, at 12pm. However, you will not be able to take on any Max Battles until September 10. You can spend the next six days preparing to be able to battle Dynamax Pokémon, gathering the resources you need to do so.

Primarily you need use Power Spots to gather Max Particles. You'll need these Particles to take on Max Battles, so gathering as many as possible now will let you take on plenty of battles when they release.

How can you gather Max Particles in Pokémon GO?

There are two ways to gather Max Particles in Pokémon GO:

  • Visit Pokémon GO Power Spots to get 120 Max Particles per visit
  • Walk 2 km to get 300 Max Particles

You can gather 1080 Max Particles per day in Pokémon GO. However, you'll need to work to maximise this. You have to claim the 300 Max Particles from walking manually. That means you can visit 4 Power Spots, which will get you 480 Max Particles. Then, claim your 300 twice for walking and you will be at 1080 Max Particles for the day.

How can I find Power Spots in Pokémon GO?

You can only collect Max Particles from a Power Spot once per day in Pokémon GO. This means you will need to find at least four Power Spots to be able to hit your daily cap. Thankfully, Power Spots will appear on the map just like PokéStops and Gyms.

Power Spots will combine unused POI information from Niantic Wayfarer and other external data. That means that they should appear in your local area at places that the community has submitted to Niantic. Expect them to be similar locations to what you're used too for Gyms and Stops. Power Spots will rotate every several days, so won't always be in the same place.

When you do find a Power Spot, you don't have to spin it. The Max Particles will be attracted to your finger.
