Everything you need to know about Max Moves in Pokémon GO.
Max Moves have arrived into Pokémon GO alongside Dynamax. These new powerful attacks work a bit differently to what we're used too in the game. So, that means there's a bit we need to learn about them and how they work.
Dynamax has already released into Pokémon GO, but Max Battles don't start until September 13. This information will apply to all Dynamax Pokémon. Both ones that are releasing on the 13th, and those that will release in the future.
How do Max Moves work in Pokémon GO?
Max Moves are special powerful attacks that Dynamax Pokémon know when you catch them. For instance, the Dynamax Wooloo you caught from the To the Max! Special Research knows three Max Moves.
These are:
- Max Strike (Unleash an extra-powerful Charged Attack)
- Max Guard (Create a barrier that reduces damage taken)
- Max Spirit (Raises the spirits of the user and allied Pokémon recovering their HP)
Two of these Max Moves will be locked, with Max Strike the only move avaliable.

How do I unlock Max Moves?
To unlock a new Max Move, like Max Guard or Max Spirit, you need to train your Dynamax Pokémon to know the move.
To reach Level 1 of a single Max Move, you will need at least 50 Candy and 400 Max Particles. While Wooloo and Swovet need 50 Candy to learn these moves, for more powerful Pokémon this could be higher.
How to level up Max Moves in Pokémon GO
Then, to level up a Max Move you follow the same system. You can take a Max Move from Level 1 all the way to Level 3. The higher the level, the more powerful the move will be. This will make taking on Max Battles at nearby Power Spots easier.
Here are the requirements for Wooloo as an example. Remember, different Pokémon might have higher (or lower) requirements for Candy and Max Particles. We're learning as we go while Dynamax slowly rolls out!
Level 1 to Level 2:
- 600 Max Particles
- 100 Wooloo Candy
Level 2 to Level 3:
- 800 Max Particles
- 40 Wooloo Candy XL
As the cap for Max Particles is 1000, you'd probably be looking at a higher candy requirement to level up other Pokémon's Max Moves rather than many more Max Particles. 40 Candy XL is already very expensive, so it seems this will be quite the grind.
