Get ready to beat Dynamax Latios and Latias in Pokémon GO.

This weekend will see Dynamax Latios and Latias arrive in Pokémon GO. Both Latios and Latias appears across all of Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 of July in five-star Max Battles. Don't forget, because these are five-star Max Battles, they will be capped at four players, not forty like Gigantamax Battles. That makes things a bit easier for smaller communities.

Thanks to that, this weekend is a great time to get out and play Pokémon GO. To up the ante, both Dynamax Latios and Latias can also be shiny.

We've gathered everything you need to know to beat Dynamax Latios and Latias this weekend.

How many Trainers do I need to beat Dynamax Latios and Latias in Pokémon GO?

It is still pretty early in the Dynamax and Gigantamax system in Pokémon GO. Therefore the answer to this question depends on how invested you and the other Trainers in your battle are. The addition of Crowned Sword Zacian and Crowned Shield Zamazenta is also now a factor. These two Pokémon have Adventure Effects that increase either attack or defence.

With really good counters, this could be completed by three Trainers. Otherwise, it is safer to aim for four.

Ideally, in that team of four, you want to have a mix of roles. Two Trainers attacking, one using Max Guard (shielding) and another using Max Spirit (healing). The attackers should focus on Pokémon that counter Latios or Latias, with the others aiming for ones that simply resist its attacks.

What are Dynamax Latios and Latias' weaknesses?

Both Dynamax Latios and Dynamax Latias have the same typing, Dragon and Psychic. This means Dynamax Latios and Latias have a weakness to Bug, Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost and Ice-type attacks in Pokémon GO.

What are the best counters for this Max Battle?

We certainly have a lot more options to choose from when taking on Max Battles than we did a couple of months ago. The addition of Crowned Sword Zacian and Crowned Shield Zamazenta have given Trainers some new and powerful options.

Like we've seen for other debuts, we've been given a preparatory free Timed Research. This leads to an encounter with Dynamax Gastly, which can become a Dynamax Gengar that will be useful for this Max Battle. Of course, if you have Gigantamax Gengar then that is even better.

The best team to use for this Max Battle is Gigantamax Gengar, Dynamax Gengar and Dynamax Blissey.

That weakness to Ghost-type attacks makes Gengar a great option in either form, better than other options of different types. We don't yet have any good Fairy, Ice, Bug or Dark-type Gigantamax choices.

Here are the best Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokémon avaliable. Blissey isn't listed because it is a bad attacker, but it is a top tier defender for Max Guard and Max Spirit.

Gigantamax Gengar
Sucker Punch & G-Max Terror
Dynamax Gengar
Shadow Claw & Max Phantasm
Single Strike Urshifu
Sucker Punch & Max Darkness
Hatterene
Charm & Max Starfall
Gigantamax Lapras
Water Gun & G-Max Resonance

Dynamax Latios and Latias hundo CPs

A Pokémon you encounter after Max Battle cannot be weather boosted. That means there is only one hundo CP value each to memorise for Dynamax Latios and Latias:

  • 2178 CP - Dynamax Latios hundo
  • 2006 CP - Dynamax Latias hundo

Good luck this weekend, Trainers. Stay tuned to esports.gg for the latest esports news and more Pokémon GO updates.
