Gyarados EX in Pokémon TCG Pocket: Building the best deck around the Water-type Pokémon

If you know anything about Pokémon, you almost certainly know who Gyarados is. This Pokémon, known for evolving from such a short-fry (Magikarp), has existed since the first generation.

Its mix of Water-type and Dragon-type moves is what makes it so fierce and has become commonly used in many players' teams and decks.

And now, with the Mythical Island expansion, Pokémon TCG Pocket has released an EX version of the card.

So, let's break down our deck build centered around Gyarados EX.

Gyarados EX Pokémon TCG Pocket deck build

Below is a list of the entire Gyarados EX deck build for Pokémon TCG Pocket:

  • Gyarados EX 2x
  • Magikarp 2x
  • Eevee 2x
  • Vaporeon 2x
  • Misty 2x
  • Sabrina 2x
  • Professor's Research 2x
  • Poké Ball 2x
  • Potion 2x
  • X Speed 2x

All decks in Pokémon TCG Pocket are required to have 20 cards, no more and no less. This deck has eight regular Pokémon cards and 12 Trainer cards.

All Pokémon in the deck

First, we need to break down all the Pokémon within the Gyarados EX deck. First off, we included Magikarp and Gyarados EX. While Magikarp is utterly useless, it is needed to evolve into Gyarados.

Gyarados EX, however, is quite strong. Its primary move, Rampaging Whirlpool, requires four Energies (three being Water) to be used. Not only does the move do 140 damage, but it also discards a random Energy from every Pokémon on the field, including yours and your opponent's.

We then included Eevee and Vaporeon. Vaporeon's ability lets you move a Water Energy from any of your Benched Pokémon to your Active Water Pokémon. This helps players build up Energy attached to Gyarados EX, allowing it to attack every turn.

All Trainer cards in deck

We then included multiple Trainer cards in this deck. Beginning with Misty, this card lets players flip as many coins as possible until they get tails. For all the heads that are flipped, you can attach that many Water Energies to a Water-type Pokémon.

This lets you stack up Energies on your Gyarados EX.

We then included Sabrina and Professor's Research, which are two Trainer Supporter cards. Sabrina forces your opponent to switch out their Active Pokémon with a Benched Pokémon. Professor's Research lets you draw two extra cards.

Remember, though, you can only use one Supporter card per turn.

This deck also has the typical Poké Ball, Potion and X Speed card to help build it out some more.

Weakness

Being a Water-type Pokémon TCG Pocket deck, the Pokémon here are weak against Electric-type Pokémon. Decks revolving around cards like Pikachu EX or Zapdos EX could do some serious damage.

However, if used correctly, this Gyarados EX deck can combat Electric-type decks easily.

Strength

Fire decks, watch out. Charizard EX does not stand a chance against Gyarados EX as all Fire-type Pokémon are weak against Water.

Still, keep your guard up, because Fire-type decks may have a few tricks up their sleeves.
