The Unexpected Login Error may seem like it’s on Riot’s end, but it’s likely either your ISP or you. Here’s how to solve it.
The Unexpected Login Error may seem similar to the "Unexpected Error With Login Session" error, but they're completely different. Here's how to solve it.
The Unexpected Login Error will pop up as you're trying to download updates or patches, or otherwise log in to League of Legends. Other login errors can be the fault of Windows or even Riot Games' servers, but this one is somewhat unique. We're going to have to get hands-on with your WiFi router for this one.

How to fix the Unexpected Login Error
The Unexpected Login Error is usually caused by a poor internet connection, though the reasons for that can be myriad. Unlike its similar-sounding cousin error, it's a problem with your ISP or your computer. The first, and easiest, option is to go to your WiFi router and physically push the reset button. This is usually a small button that is indented into the casing, so as to prevent accidentally pushing it. You'll usually need something with a small point, like a paperclip or a small pencil, to push the reset button. This will reboot your router and may fix the issue all on its own.
If that doesn't work, we're going to have to change your DNS. DNS stands for Domain Name System, and it is often referred to as the phonebook of the internet. Here's how to change it in a few simple steps:
- Open Settings - Network & Internet - Change Adapter Settings
- Select a connection, right-click, and choose Properties - IPv4 - Properties
- Select "Use the following DNS server address"
- Restart your computer and try to reboot League of Legends
These two solutions should solve your issue, though if your internet connection is incredibly shaky at the given moment anyhow, it could just be the connection acting up. Those are the most common causes for the Unexpected Login Error code, and trying both should get you back to League of Legends in no time. Otherwise, your best bet is to be patient and do something else until your internet connection becomes more stable.
If none of these work, try filing a ticket directly with Riot Games through their player support page.
