What to expect from Diablo 4 Season 9

Season 9: Sins of Horadrim brings three prominent additions to the core Diablo 4 experience. These are customizable Horadric Spellcrafts (powers), Horadric Strongrooms (mini-dungeons), and Escalating Nightmares (new endgame activity).

Horadric Spellcrafts are flashy powers that add new and exciting ways to carve builds in Season 9. Unlike Season 8’s Boss Powers, they can be customized to offer varying benefits.

Every Horadric power offers three layers of customization. These are:

  • Catalysts: Base power of spells.
  • Infusions: Modifiers that tweak a spell’s element type.
  • Arcana: Modifiers that buff a catalyst's effect.

Catalysts are base powers with unique effects. For instance, Celestial Surge is an Astral Magic that pulls all surrounding enemies and unleashes a torrent of stars that randomly strike the area and deal damage.

Infusions modify the type of elemental damage your Catalysts deal. For example, Smoldering Amber allows your Catalyst to deal Fire and or Burning damage and provides other Fire-related passive effects. Similarly, Nebulous Extract lets your Catalyst deal Shadow and or Corruption damage.

You can equip up to three Arcana to boost your Catalyst’s efficiency. These includes perks like increased Catalyst’s effect size to buffs like Unstoppable.

Arcana comes in three rarities: Magic, Rare, and Legendary. Each Legendary Arcana provides a different effect for each Catalyst. For instance, with Nightmare Orb Arcana, Celestial Surge has a 25% chance to drop an additional Star. Similarly, Disintegrate restores 5% of Maximum Life and Primary Resource by killing enemies unaffected by Fear. There are five Catalysts and Legendary Arcana, and they offer 25 unique combinations to suit your build and playstyle.

Horadic Strongrooms are mini-dungeons that appear randomly within Nightmare Dungeons. These are time-gated locations full of demons and a boss encounter. Completing these will get you Horadic Attunement, which you can exchange for an appropriate Horadric Cache.

Escalating Nightmares is an endgame activity in which you complete three subsequent Nightmare Dungeons. The final encounter after completing all Dungeons would be with Astaroth, who you may recall from the Diablo 4 campaign. Furthermore, Nightmare Dungeon affixes stacks onto the next dungeon, thus making each subsequent level more challenging.

In addition to new activities and powers, Season 9 makes a plethora of quality of life changes. Nightmare Dungeons are getting a huge overhaul, with additions like new Affixes. Also, each Diablo 4 class gets a new Unique item to boast.
