The Vicar’s Key opens a chest, bur how do you get it?

There is no shortage of locked doors and chests in Atomfall. It seems like every time you venture into a new area, there are a dozen additional locks that all need a different key to open. One of the locked chests you'll likely stumble across in Atomfall is the Vicar's Chest, and it requires the Vicar's Key to see what's inside.

Of course, finding the Vicar's Key is far easier said than done. The Vicar is located in St. Katherine's Church in Wyndham Village, but just because he's there doesn't mean the key is there. Or, that's exactly what it could mean. Down in the guide below, you can see exactly how to find the Vicar's Key and what's inside the Vicar's Chest in Atomfall.

Fortunately, the Vicar's Key isn't really too difficult to get. That's the good news. The bad news is that you have to kill the Vicar in order to get his key.

That's right, the Vicar's Key is only acquired after killing the Vicar at St. Katherine's Church and looting his body. While you might not have any immediate quarrels with killing the Vicar in Atomfall, you don't want to off the character right away. Instead, you want to ideally wait until the "Murder in the Church" investigation has concluded.

This quest is started by approaching the dead body at the end of St. Katherine's Church, and the Vicar can play a key role throughout the quest. However, if he's dead, you can't complete the investigation, which can cost you some valuable rewards for your character.

So, in order to maximize the loot you can receive in Atomfall, you want to fully finish up with Murder in the Church before committing a second murder on the Vicar. You also want to try and have the Vicar's second-in-command, Pamela Shaw, not see you off the Vicar. If she does, she'll run and tell the Protocol soldiers that you're responsible, so you'll want to kill her as well.

Once the Vicar is dead, though, you can loot his body to secure the Vicar's Key.

Using the Vicar's Key in Atomfall

With the Vicar's Key in hand, make your way up the stairs on the left side of St. Katherine's Church. Keep heading up the stairs until you reach a small landing with a chest in the middle of it.

Using the Vicar's Key, open the chest and inside you'll find the following loot:

  • Atomic Battery
  • "A Fruitful Trade" note

The Atomic Battery is the clear highlight of the loot, as this is one of the most valuable items in Atomfall. It's used in the Interchange and plays a major role in the main story quests. You might not need it at the time you open the Vicar's Chest, but you want to make sure you hang on to the battery until you do need it. If you don't have enough room in your inventory, you can read our guide about increasing inventory space.

The letter inside the chest leads you on a new side quest that doesn't bear much fruit (pun intended), but it does lead you to a new section of the map in Atomfall.

And there you have it, that's how to find and use the Vicar's Key.

That's all for now. Stick around on esports.gg for more news and updates.
