Can you explore Japan with a friend?

The release date of Assassin's Creed Shadows is coming up fast and while many players are gearing up for the launch, other players have some lingering questions they want answered before they get too excited. One of the many questions players have had regarding Assassin's Creed Shadows is about co-op and multiplayer features.

While it's not overly common for Assassin's Creed games to feature a cooperative element, Shadows marks a major turning point for the franchise. Ubisoft has been committed to ensuring this game lives up to expectations and starts a new chapter in Assassin's Creed. So, will that chapter include any sort of co-op play? Read the guide below to find out.

Can you play Assassin's Creed Shadows in co-op?

Unfortunately, the launch of Assassin's Creed Shadows does not feature any sort of co-op or multiplayer elements. You won't be able to run around 16th-century Japan getting into all sorts of mayhem with a partner at your side. The game also only features the single-player campaign, meaning there's no additional multiplayer mode to hop into on the side.

However, this is all confirmed for the launch, not beyond the launch. According to Insider Gaming, Shadows is set to receive a new co-op game mode called "League" shortly after the game is released in mid-March. We don't have any concrete release date for the mode, but there are some interesting tidbits from the report.

Insider Gaming states that players could team up as dual protagonists Yasuke and Naoe in a separate co-op playthrough that might feature different elements from the single-player mode.

There aren't too many additional details on what the mode might entail and Ubisoft has yet to confirm any sort of co-op mode, so take all of this with a grain of salt. While Insider Gaming has a great track record when it comes to leaks, the rumored League mode could be scrapped or changed to something else entirely.

If League does exist, we would likely hear some kind of announcement shortly after Shadows launches on March 20. Then, we could see a possible release date and more details on the mode.

Until then, though, you can only play through Assassin's Creed Shadows as a solo player in the main single-player campaign. Fortunately, the campaign can take up to 80 hours if you complete all content, so we'll certainly have plenty on our plates to start.
