Within the first five minutes of Assassin's Creed Shadows, you're given a choice to make. You begin by playing as Yasuke, a slave brought to Japan by his master, Alessandro Valignano, to visit the temple of Oda Nobunaga. Yasuke and his master enter the temple to speak with Oda, who is very interested in Yasuke due to his skin color. Eventually, Oda asks Yasuke if he understands the language that's being spoken, and you need to either speak up or stay silent.
Since this is your first real choice in Assassin's Creed Shadows, you don't want to screw things up by talking or remaining silent. So, check out the guide below to see the outcomes of either choice and which one you should pick.
Choosing to speak to Oda Nobunaga in Assassin's Creed Shadows
The first choice you can make through the dialogue wheel is speaking up, which makes Yasuke answer Oda with: "I understand you well." This is in response to Oda asking Yasuke if he understands the language being spoken in the temple, even after Yasuke's master says he doesn't speak the language.
Obviously, the big risk factor is upsetting Oda by speaking and/or humiliating your master, as he just lied to Oda by saying Yasuke doesn't understand the conversation. If you choose to say "I understand you well," then Oda will actually be impressed. The master will claim that Yasuke has never spoken that language before, but it's clear that Oda doesn't believe him.

Oda asks Yasuke's master to leave the temple but commands Yasuke to stay behind. After some dialogue, Oda will make Yasuke his ward and in the next scene of Assassin's Creed Shadows, you fight at Oda's side.

Choosing to stay silent in Assassin's Creed Shadows
The other option you have in the dialogue wheel is to "Say nothing." If you choose this option, Oda ushers everyone out of the room, including his patrons and Yasuke's master. Then, Oda asks Yasuke another question that calls into question whether Yasuke really doesn't understand what's being said.

With this question you have two dialogue options: "I was following Valignano's orders" or "I am still learning your language and customs." Regardless of what you say, Oda is still uneasy about Valignano and commands that you stay with him as his ward. Then, the game plays out the same way as if you had chosen to speak up originally.

So, in the end, your choice to speak up or stay silent when Oda first asks you to talk is irrelevant in Assassin's Creed Shadows. Yasuke still goes on the same quest in the next scene and nothing changes no matter what options you pick in dialogue. Fortunately, the same can't be said for future decisions in Shadows, so don't think the entire game is full of meaningless choices.
