Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena video game developed and maintained by Valve. The game’s chief developer is Icefrog who helped develop the game with Valve.

Dota 2 is a sequel to Defense of the Ancients (DOTA), which was a mod in Blizzard’s Warcraft. The game has two teams of five players each, both with a common objective – Destroy the enemy ‘Ancient’, which is a throne/building near the enemy’s spawn.

Dota 2 was one of the first esports in the modern era of esports. Valve launched the game’s esports with The International. TI 2011’s prize pool was $1.6 million, and Valve’s contribution to the prize pool has remained same since then. Despite TI10 featuring such a massive prize pool, Valve’s contribution remained the same.

But Valve introduced crowdfunding in TI, a move that catapulted the game’s prize pool to new heights. The tenth edition of The International had a cumulative prize pool of over $40,018,195. CIS Team Spirit won the tournament, taking home $18,208,300.

Despite its popularity, many in the community blame TI for the poor structure of the title’s esports. The International dwarves the prize pools of every other tournament in Dota 2, and as a result, its all players care about.

Dota 2 has had several eports organizations involved including Team Secret, OG, Alliance, Natus Vincere, Team Empire, HellRaisers, Evil Geniuses and more. Tournament organizers such as ESL, DreamHack, WePlay, Oneesports have also hosted several and Majors.
