Fly is back! EG re-signs their former team captain

Fly returns to take his position as Captain of EG after a few years in the wilderness.

Tal "Fly" Aizik is back as captain of Evil Geniuses. The Support player’s return to the North American organization was announced across social media late on Sunday, May 29th.

The return ends just over six months away from the Evil Genius roster. During that time Fly joined Southeast Asia’s Talon Esports, along with Kim "Gabbi" Villafuerte, for a single DPC season. That stint ended in a failure to be promoted to Division I for Talon Esports, despite a strong showing in the Open qualifiers.

Now Fly is back on EG, filling the spot of the departing Jesse “JerAx” Vainikka, whose departure was announced just after EG’s elimination from the Stockholm Major.

Fly’s return to EG

The return doesn’t come as a shock for many EG fans and those in the Dota 2 community. While no one can fault EG’s performance regionally, with a first-place finish to Tour 2, their results internationally were lackluster.

At the Stockholm Major, EG crashed out of the group stage having only managed to take a game off beastcoast and BOOM Esports. The Team had not won a single series, only claiming 1-1 scorelines. This seemed indicative of a team that couldn’t perform on the international stage. International performance is something all Dota teams are now looking forward to with TI11 looming in the future.

As a result, JeraX has been replaced, seemingly for a tried and trusted commedity for EG. Fly has led EG to The International every season he’s competed with the team.

Why not more changes?

But while this isn’t the shock, controversial, and momentous signing that his first signing with EG, Fly’s return does leave some questions. The most notable for some fans being “why does Coach Kanishka "BuLba" Sosale” still have a job?” Many fans pointed to BuLba’s drafts as the reason behind the EG’s struggles at The Stockholm Major.

Whatever the reason, EG clearly believes that this tried and tested formula is the one to go with. The eyes of all teams are on TI in this final Tour, and EG wants a better performance at the Arlington Major, and TI11.
