He wasn’t always a big squid monster, y’know.
The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC for Elden Ring promises to drip-feed even more lore to the game’s rabid community, and Godwyn is the number one god to be explored. Not even the addition of Messmer as Marika and Radagon’s third child can pull attention away from the first dead Empyrean.
With Godwyn still at the front of players’ minds, will Shadow of the Erdtree delve into his mysterious past, Night of the Black Knives, and connections to an eclipse?
Who is Godwyn the Golden?
First, it's important to understand who Godwyn is. He is the first son of Marika and Godfrey, the first Elden Lord. He is the ancestor of Godrick the Grafted, the game’s first intended story boss. Godwyn defeated the ancient dragon Fortissax, which eventually turned into an alliance between the two civilizations. All signs point to Godwyn being a beloved figure in the Lands Between.
However, he wouldn’t stay beloved for long. On the Night of the Black Knives, Ranni killed Godwyn using a piece of the Rune of Death, marking the first time a demigod had been killed. This eventually sparked the Shattering, which effectively ends long before the arrival of the player character.

Elden Ring DLC could reveal Godwyn’s real nature
The Elden Ring DLC trailer never makes a direct reference to Godwyn, but there are several hints that the dead demigod will play a role in the story.
The first clues are in the main game. Godwyn is extremely important to the overall story of Elden Ring. He appears multiple times in-game as a giant octopus creature. These represent his body after the Rune of Death killed his soul. Fan-favorite Lunar Princess Ranni is his killer as she confirms in-game. The murderous puppet’s voice is in the trailer, so she will play some part in the new chapter.
The recent trailer also contains a few indications that Godwyn will appear in some form during the Elden Ring DLC. One enemy closeup appears to show an eclipse in the background. Eclipses are connected to the Rune of Death and Godwyn through the Eclipse Shotel, one of the game’s legendary weapons.
We previously predicted that Messmer will not be the final boss of Shadow of the Erdtree, and will instead be a side character for the actual threat. The story may revolve around Miquella’s plan to revive Godwyn, which is hinted at in the flavor text of the Golden Epitaph straight sword. Perhaps a monstrous half-revived Godwyn will be the actual final boss of the expansion.
