Forget the typical anniversary world event. This anniversary deserves a huge party and a new raid!

It's been nearly 20 years since we first booted up World of Warcraft (WoW) and made our first residents in Azeroth. That's a pretty insane achievement for an massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), and one that still has us paying a monthly subscription fee. Let's see what they have in store for us during the 20th anniversary celebration.

WoW 20th anniversary release date

The 20th anniversary event will arrive in patch 11.0.5, which is scheduled to launch on Oct. 22.

Classic Timewalking

Players can experience some of vanilla WoW's most famous dungeons through Classic Timewalking. This will encompass both wings of Dire Maul, both sections of Stratholme, Zul'Farrak, and The Deadmines. A vendor for Classic Timewalking will offer similar rewards to those of other timewalking vendors.

Moreover, the existing timewalking vendors are receiving updates to offer new items for sale.

Revisting the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj opening

For those of that were around in the days of Vanilla WoW, we all remember the opening of the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj. It's often regarded as one of the most iconic eras in the history of WoW. The opening of the gates required the entire server to work together through farming, grinding, and one of the most grueling quest chains ever. The reward for completing this and ringing the gong led to the "Scarab Lord" title and the rarest mount in the game — the often-revered Black Qiraji Battle Tank.

For the 20th anniversary, Chromie uses her codex to let players revisit this time period in a scenario setting.

Scenario information:

  • Requires level 15 to participate
  • Can be accessed through the Random Group Finder
  • Is for 10 to 20 players
  • Consists of 3 enemy factions: Scourge, Qiraji, and Legion
  • Consists of 3 bosses: Tichondrius, Kel'Thuzad, and Ossirian

Caverns of Time mini-games and festivities

For the 20th anniversary, Blizzard will be moving the festival grounds outside of the Caverns of Time entrance and adding tons more events and games.

  • Fashion Frenzy: Inspired by the current Trial of Style event in the game, this will be a transmog competition where players will have to theme their look based on criteria presented before them.
  • Lorewalker Cho's Storytime: Everyone's favorite storyteller will be given his own stage where you can hear him tell stories of Azeroth's past. While not as interactive as some of the other events, this is one sure to please all of the lore nerds out there.
  • Mount Mania: Expected to be the most popular of the festivities, Mount Mania is a chance for people to compete for who has the best or rarest mounts in the game.
