World of Warcraft’s Plunderstorm returns on Jan. 14 with new rewards and the chance at victory for all.

World of Warcraft’s (WoW) Plunderstorm is set to return next week on Jan. 14. This will let players re-enter the Arathi Highlands and loot, plunder, and slay their opponents in the 60-player battle royale. With a host of brand-new rewards and many returning rewards from the previous iteration, players will surely be queueing up again for the time-limited event.

What is Plunderstorm?

Plunderstorm is WoW’s take on the battle royale genre, where 60 players drop into the Arathi Highlands and obtain power-ups and skills before attempting to be the sole survivor(s). Much like with any battle royale, the zone in which players can fight shrinks over time, forcing more player versus player (PvP) combat as the game goes on longer. Playing this mode does, unfortunately, require an active WoW subscription. However, no further knowledge of the game and its mechanics is realistically required.

The point of the fighting is to acquire a victory, but more importantly for some, the “Plunder.” Plunder is a special currency obtained during the event itself. There are multiple ways to acquire Plunder, all of which are listed below:

  • Killing mobs scattered throughout Arathi Highlands
  • Simply looting it off the floor
  • Killing other players
  • Winning the round
  • Completing quests
  • Opening chests

After a game, whether you win or get eliminated, all your Plunder comes out with you and can be spent at the Plunderstore.

Plunderstorm rewards

During its first iteration, Plunderstorm’s rewards came through “Renown,” which functioned similarly to WoW’s reputation system but reached a cap of level 40 for maximum rewards. For the new version, players will be farming Plunder and spending it at the Plunderstore. While this gives players a chance to focus on what they want to buy first, a little under 40,000 Plunder will be required for every new item available.

Rewards include pets, toys, titles, weapons and armor transmogrifications, and mounts as well, with some being brand-new and others returning from the original Plunderstorm event.
