ChatpGPT Canvas is still in Beta.

OpenAI has rolled out Canvas, a brand new feature for ChatGPT that allows users to edit and modify the AI output. Users can do this in a side-by-side panel giving them better control over the final output and tuning it to their preference. The new feature announcement follows a $6.6 billion funding round for the San Francisco-based tech company.

What is Open AI Canvas?

The ChatGPT interface is good for providing answers, but when content requires edits and multiple revisions, it sheds light on one of the platform’s biggest drawbacks. Canvas aims to solve this problem allowing users to edit and modify the AI response and customize it to their liking.

With canvas, ChatGPT can better understand the context of what you’re trying to accomplish. You can highlight specific sections to indicate exactly what you want ChatGPT to focus on. Like a copy editor or code reviewer, it can give inline feedback and suggestions with the entire project in mind.

Users can directly edit text or code and they can also restore previous versions if they feel the need to go back. If you are confused about when and how to use Canvas, you can use the prompt ‘Use Canvas’ to open the new feature. ChatGPT will also open Canvas automatically if it detects you might need to edit or modify the work in any way whatsoever.

OpenAI Canvas is built on top of the ChatGPT-4o model and is already rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Team Subscribers. At present, it is only available on PC with mobile users only able to view the Canvas and not edit it or modify it in any way. Meanwhile, Enterprise and edu users will be able to access this feature starting next week.

What can You do with ChatGPT Canvas?

Here are some initial use cases for ChatGPT canvas and how you can optimize the content to your liking.

  • Suggest edits: ChatGPT offers inline suggestions and feedback.
  • Adjust the length: Edits the document length to be shorter or longer.
  • Change reading level: Adjusts the reading level, from Kindergarten to Graduate School.
  • Add final polish: Checks for grammar, clarity, and consistency.
  • Add emojis: Adds relevant emojis for emphasis and color.

You can use Canvas for regular queries, but it is also useful more so for coding and constant revisions to the code. Here are some ways ChatGPT Canvas would be useful while coding according to OpenAI.

  • Review code: ChatGPT provides inline suggestions to improve your code.
  • Add logs: Inserts print statements to help you debug and understand your code.
  • Add comments: Add comments to the code to make it easier to understand.
  • Fix bugs: Detects and rewrites problematic code to resolve errors.
  • Port to a language: Translates your code into JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP.

You can use Canvas to review code, add comments, or even fix syntax bugs. You can also use it to translate your work into other languages including JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP. The quick way to move your content across different languages would be a significant help and save time for programmers.

When does ChatGPT Canvas feature auto-launch in ChatGPT?

Users can always prompt Canvas to open and will be able to use it without any problems. However, Canvas would also open when ChatGPT feels is the right moment and you would need to make some edits or modify the output as per your liking. While it is a work in progress, some of the methods used by ChatGPT to ensure seamless Canvas use include the ability to differentiate between core behaviors.

A key challenge was defining when to trigger a canvas. We taught the model to open a canvas for prompts like “Write a blog post about the history of coffee beans” while avoiding over-triggering for general Q&A tasks like “Help me cook a new recipe for dinner.” For writing tasks, we prioritized improving “correct triggers” (at the expense of “correct non-triggers”), reaching 83% compared to a baseline zero-shot GPT-4o with prompted instructions.

Canvas is still in early beta so there will undoubtedly be multiple changes to the new feature. As ChatGPT improves its end-user experience, Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. Recently, Google also announced the ability to allow creators to use AI to generate video content on YouTube and YouTube Shorts.
