Nvidia’s stock price continues to decline from its November highs after performance drop news.

Several users have been complaining about reduced performance after using Nvidia’s gameplay software. One of the world’s most valuable companies, Nvidia’s software - the core product might be downgrading your system’s performance by as much as up to 15%.

The report follows Nvidia’s latest driver update which saw the Nvidia app replace the GeForce experience as the primary app.

Nvidia App: Not-so-great Performance

A tweet by Sebastian Castellanos on X.com highlighted the various performance issues when using Nvidia’s software.

Yikes, looks like having the NVIDIA app installed was destroying perf in some of my games (mainly UE5 ones) like Black Myth Wukong and The Talos Principle 2. Uninstalling the NVIDIA app fixed some horrendous frametime issues and gave me an extra 15%+ of performance!

The tweet resulted in further investigation by Tom’s Hardware, a website focused on tech hardware and software, which found truth in the claim. They found performance issues of up to 15% when using Nvidia’s software in the background.

The decline in performance was inconsistent depending on the game in question as well as the system. However, there was a clear trend of diminishing performance when using the new Nvidia app.

Castellanos mostly compared the software’s performance on Unreal Engine titles - which showed a visible decline in performance.

However, there was also a contradictory report saying the Nvidia app does not provide a lower performance on Unreal Engines - and it was a more subjective outlook that resulted in the same report.

Featuring a unified GPU control center, NVIDIA app allows fine-tuning of game, program, and driver settings from a single place, while introducing a redesigned in-game overlay for convenient access to powerful gameplay recording tools, performance monitoring overlays, and game enhancing filters, including innovative new AI-powered filters for RTX users.

Nvidia app is the replacement for GeForce NOW which was the go-to Nvidia software for many years. The GEFORCE app will not receive any further updates and users can use the Nvidia app which is the primary app for now. The new app, however, seems to have had a negative impact on player systems, and in some cases, by up to as much as 15%.

At least one user reported up to a 15% performance loss in Black Myth: Wukong when testing an RTX 4080 Super paired with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, so it could be that higher-performance GPUs are even more impacted. -Tom’s Hardware.

It’s still not clear which engines are the most impacted with many gamers saying Unreal Engine 5 seems to be showing the most drawback.

For now there seems to be a simple fix, but the broader solution would have to come in the form of an update by Nvidia.
