The game had crossed a million concurrent players in 2020, a few months after the pandemic set in. The game’s popularity and ease of play make it one of the easiest titles for new players to pick up. 

Owned by Psyonix, Rocket League was previously available on the Steam Store. However, after Epic Games bought Psyonix in 2019, the game moved to be exclusively available on the Epic Games store. Players who had bought the game on Steam previous to the Epic Games deal can still continue to play the game on Steam without any problems. Currently, Rocket League is exclusively available for PC on the Epic Games store.

Rocket League also has a thriving esports scene supported by Epic Games. The Rocket League Championship Series features the best teams from different regions competing in their local regional leagues. In April 2023, Karmine Corp won the Rocket League Winter Major, securing the first invite to the RLCS World Championship in August of 2023.
