R.E.P.O.’s launch comes without matchmaking, as the developers drop the ball on an otherwise amazing game.

R.E.P.O., or The Retrieve, Extract, & Profit Operation, has been blowing up for a few weeks already. The co-op horror title, which mimics games such as Lethal Company, has gone viral, taking the world by storm. However, there is definitely a big hole in the title’s release. While most other similar games feature some sort of matchmaking, R.E.P.O. took a different path.

Matchmaking in R.E.P.O. is a no-go

While R.E.P.O. is one of the games which is taking the world by storm currently, it does have a major flaw. With Among Us setting the trend, social deduction cooperative games quickly became a hit a few years ago. Lethal Company, Content Warning, and LOCKDOWN Protocol all following suit, R.E.P.O. has taken control at the top in recent weeks. Unfortunately, all those titles and many more have something that R.E.P.O. missed out on.

Matchmaking. Simply, the game can be played solo or with friends who are invited. This has caused a major rift in those playing the newly viral title.

Hosting or joining a game requires players to invite or join others whom they already have on their friend list. This takes nothing away from the fun that can be found within R.E.P.O. But it does leave a gaping hole in what the game could have been.

Strangely, the developers had no clue that their game would reach the heights that it did and quickly released a video to explain their decision. In essence, the game was not released with matchmaking due to the developers not wanting to involve an anti-cheat system. From the video below, you can see that the small team of Semiwork do want players to continue to enjoy the game but also understand that hackers exist in every game.

For now, R.E.P.O. will remain without official matchmaking lobbies. With that said, it is still a game that can be played with a huge number of friends. With the developers promising constant updates and new levels already on the cards, the title should continue to prosper. We hope to see matchmaking servers coming to R.E.P.O. in the near future, but for now, we can enjoy becoming the King of the Losers with our friends.
