Mega Evolution cards make a comeback in 2025. Are you ready?

In a teaser during the Pokémon Presents livestream, The Pokémon Company announced the return of Mega Evolution cards, which will be released in the upcoming 2025 sets.

While the teaser mentioned nothing about the future sets containing Mega Evolution Pokémon, it gave the fans a glimpse of two cards: Mega Lucario ex and Mega Gardevoir ex.

Looking at the two sample Mega Evolution Pokémon, it is expected that the upcoming cards of said variety will have game-breaking moves and abilities, as their rule box allows the opponent to claim three Prize cards upon defeat.

Both cards also bear the regulation mark "I," implying that we might see some Mega Evolution Pokémon possibly months after the release of the Journey Together and Destined Rivals sets.

Since the new Mega Pokémon cards are still in development, it's difficult to assess the effectiveness of the teaser cards, especially in terms of their impact on the Standard meta.

A brief history of Mega Evolution Pokémon cards

Mega Evolution entered Pokémon TCG in 2014 with the XY set, featuring the mega-evolved forms of Venusaur and Blastoise. The fan-favorite Charizard also received its Mega Evolution cards later in the Flash Fire set that followed.

Unlike the Mega Pokémon cards for 2025, the original ones during the XY era are labeled as "M Pokémon-EX," which is a type of Pokémon-EX. The rule box for Pokémon-EX is the same for modern Pokémon ex cards, allowing the opponent to only get two Prize cards if they get Knocked Out.

The last set that featured Mega Evolution Pokémon was Cosmic Eclipse of the Sun & Moon era, which was released in 2019. The set only added a single Mega Pokémon in the form of a TAG TEAM Pokémon GX card — Mega Lopunny and Jigglypuff GX.
