Celebrate the year of the Snake in Pokémon GO.
The Lunar New Year brings a chance to get lucky in Pokémon GO with a range of bonuses coming to the game. 2025 is the year of the snake, and as a result the theme of the event features several snake-ish Pokémon.
So, here is everything that the event has in store so you can celebrate the Lunar New Year in Pokémon GO.
2025 Lunar New Year event in Pokémon GO
The Lunar New Year event starts with the Lunar New Year and runs from Wednesday, January 29, at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, February 2, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. local time.
Event Bonuses bring increased lucky chances
The following bonuses will be active during the event:
- Increased chance to get Lucky Pokémon in trades.
- Increased chance to become Lucky Friends.
These are some fantastic bonuses and are totally worth taking full advantage of. Try and open all your Gifts and Trade as many Pokémon as you can during this event.
Lunar New Year Pokémon GO Wild Encounters
During the Lunar New Year event the following Pokémon will appear in the wild.
- Ekans
- Onix
- Snivy
- Darumaka
- Dunsparce
Additionally, the following Pokémon will appear but less frequently:
- Gyarados
- Dratini
All of these Pokémon can be shiny. Additionally, the chances of encountering a Shiny Ekans will be increased during the event.

Once again, all of these Pokémon can be shiny when hatched from an Egg. There will be boosted odds of hatching a Shiny Nosepass from these Eggs.
Other event details and paid Timed Research
As is standard in Pokémon GO, the Lunar New Year event will feature event-themed Field Research, event-themed Timed Research as well as PokéStop Showcases and a Collection Challenge.
In addition there will be a paid Timed Research ticket, costing $2 (or local equivalent). This will include the following rewards:
- Two Lucky Eggs
- One Incubator
- Encounters with Ekans and Nosepass
