Firestar73’s Pokémon GO Orlando Regional win was overturned after a headphone incident in the grand finals. Here’s what happened, the rule behind the decision, and why the community is divided.
Firestar73’s Pokémon GO Orlando Regional victory has been overturned after a headphone incident during the grand finals. Tournament organizers ruled the celebration as “unsportsmanlike,” issuing a game loss penalty that handed the title to NiteTimeClasher.
After dropping to the lower bracket quarterfinals, American Pokémon GO player Firestar73 mounted an impressive comeback, winning three consecutive best-of-three series to earn a second shot at the championship.
His initial finals match against fellow American player NiteTimeClasher became a one-sided series as Firestar73 quickly forced a reset (3-1), erasing his opponent’s twice-to-beat advantage. The final reset, however, reached a rubber match, but Firestar73, with his well-timed switching and bulky Forretress, managed to take game 5.
As Firestar73 is about to claim his first-ever Pokémon GO title, his elation causes him to stand up and throw his headphones, albeit not in a malicious manner.

Despite the entire stream of the competition announcing Firestar73 as the champion, reports later confirmed that he received a game loss penalty, prompting NiteTimeClasher to take the crown, the prize money, and 350 championship points.
Firestar73’s game loss penalty
While it’s not rare to see winning players celebrating in official Pokémon tournaments, the Unsporting Conduct section of Play! Pokémon Penalty Guidelines clearly states that once a competitor engages in “excessive celebration that is used to taunt another competitor or participant,” tournament organizers or judges can escalate the penalty to a game loss.

During the finals of the Pokémon GO Orlando Regional Championship, the judges likely used such a rule as a reference, although whether Firestar73’s way of throwing off his headphone constitutes an excessive celebration or unsporting conduct remains a topic of discussion among the Pokémon community.
In a recent post on X, Firestar73 thanked fans for their support and said that an account detailing his experience will be shared soon in an interview.
Reactions to the conclusion of the Pokémon GO Orlando Regional Championship
The news about Firestar73’s nullified victory quickly caused an uproar on social media. Ved “Beelzeboy” Bamb, the 2025 Pokémon GO World Champion, says that the action of Firestar73 is only natural, especially if that player never won a major tournament before.
Another Pokémon GO player and Twitch streamer, KeldeoSH, also posted a rather witty post showing how Play! Pokémon tournament winners should celebrate after a stressful weekend of regionals:
Other fans even encouraged everyone to leave feedback on the official Pokémon support link to express their support for Firestar73 and call out the tournament organizers to reverse the decision.
As of writing, Play! Pokémon, the tournament circuit run by The Pokémon Company, has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
