The Overwatch 2 x Street Fighter 6 collab sparked backlash as fans felt Juno getting the Chun-Li skin over Mei didn’t sit well.
"They actually hate Mei," wrote a player on X as a reaction to the release of the Overwatch 2 x Street Fighter 6 collaboration that showcased Juno as Chun-Li instead of Mei. Like this comment, many others have been supporting the idea that Mei should be the hero getting the skin. But why is that?
Overwatch 2 Mei's nationality
The most common reaction online has been the fact that Mei, as well as Chun-Li, are both Chinese-born characters. Contrary to Juno, who was born on Mars, people believe Mei was the perfect hero to get that skin due to the character's nationality and features. Others even defend that Juno did not need a third collaboration skin, while Mei "would be better anyway".

Many have accused the company of prioritizing profit over the skins, as Juno and other heroes, such as Kiriko and Mercy (who is not part of this specific collaboration), sell exceptionally well. They called them "the golden girls of Overwatch." Another user pointed out that Doomfist, the only fighting game-inspired character in Overwatch 2, is not included in this collaboration.
Some users have been making disrespectful comments about Mei's body and appearance. Validating your opinion with harmful remarks is not a productive approach.
Mei x Juno as Chun-Li: "Mei can't do roundhouse kicks!"
Not only did Juno's mains come to her defense! Many players compared Chun-Li's kicking abilities with Juno's capacity to perform a roundhouse kick instead of Mei's, as one of the strongest points to her getting the skin instead of the damage hero. Other fans are saying that nothing between Chun-Li and Mei is similar to justify the skin outside of being from East Asia. "At least Juno does a kick as her melee," the person wrote on X.

Mad at the wrong thing
When the community decides to take a stand, they truly commit to it. While many people have been complaining about the Mei, Juno, and Chun-Li situation, others have suggested that there are "better things to be upset about" on the Overwatch 2 x Street Fighter 6 collaboration.
One user pointed out that fans should be concerned about the Overwatch 2 team's decision to give a Juri skin to Kiriko, noting that Juri is Korean and Kiriko is Japanese. For context, these two countries have a complex and difficult history due to Japan's colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945.
Kiriko's problem
The issue of "another Kiriko's skin" has come up again with the announcement of the support hero as one of the characters receiving a skin in the Overwatch 2 x Street Fighter 6 collaboration. Since her release in October 2022, Kiriko has gotten 30 skins. Kiriko is now referred to as "Government-Mandated Kiriko" because Overwatch 2 always selects her for new skins. According to Overbuff, Kiriko is the fourth most played hero of all time with a 4.03% pick rate, behind Moira (4,23%), Mercy (8.31%), and Ana (8.67%). Certain heroes like Ana, Cassidy, Genji, Moira, and Mercy have been increasing their popularity due to the new game mode, Stadium, which has limited character options.
Overall, not everyone in the community is responding well to this skin line. It's not that the skins themselves aren't attractive because most people agree they are. The issue lies in Overwatch 2 choosing the "wrong heroes" to represent the Street Fighter 6 characters.
