Overwatch 2’s newest tank might be two old characters combined.

Overwatch 2 released the Season 13 trailer which revealed multiple new skins, map reworks, and most importantly, more about the new Scottish tank. In fact, he might be inspired by two characters who predate Overwatch and Overwatch 2: Phreak and McCloud.

Who is OW2's newest tank?

The newest pieces of information we have are from the Overwatch 2 Season 13 trailer, specifically the final few seconds.

The camera pans to some small graffiti to reveal a big one that reads "PHREAKS." Over it, a "Scottish man," according to the closed captions, says "It's looking like a revolution."

Is the newest hero Phreak?

Naturally, the graffiti led many to theorize that this is a teaser for Phreak. Phreak was a hero made for Prometheus, the internal name for the game that would eventually become Overwatch. Their design, on the other hand, was taken from the MMO project Titan.

Phreak's skills were labeled "Cannon," "Stomp," and "Attract." All three abilities would be what you would expect to see on a tank, meaning that if our newest character ends up being them, they didn't lose a lot of their identity over the years.

The original Phreak's design also matches the dev hero icon for the new tank that was "leaked" during BlizzCon last year.

While it's worth noting that our new OW2 tank is slotted in between Sigma and Winston, this might be due to their development name. Many options arise as there are many words you can fit in between, but something like "Vandal" would be a fitting dev name. Edit: It's "Spiker."

Incidentally, this same frame from BlizzCon also "leaked" Juno, where she is slotted between Moira and Zenyatta. Her development name was Space Ranger, which may explain her place in the alphabetical arrangement.

The first known reference to "Phreak" is the Cinematic Trailer, released in 2014. A punk-style man, seen on the Paris slide, is wearing a leather jacket that has "Phreak" at the back.

McCloud, the Scottish half

Another possible design inspiration is McCloud. Like Phreak, McCloud was a hero from Prometheus & Titan.

He's widely theorized to be of Scottish nationality, due to his name and design. Additionally, one of his abilities is named "Only One," which might be a callback to the Highlander franchise.

"He doesn't look like the punk, graffiti-spraying type," you may ask. Unlike Phreak, McCloud is already in Overwatch 2. On King's Row and Esperança, a painting features McCloud with Junker Queen atop a hill, so there's a connection there, at least.

It's highly possible that Blizzard elected to meld these two development characters together. We'll definitely learn more about our new Tank hero as Overwatch 2 Season 13 nears.
