Overwatch 2 leaver penalty explained

Blizzard is focusing on the Overwatch 2 leaver penalty in Season 7 through a queue suspension. This affects players who leave four out of 20 games played. There's a 10-minute suspension from game modes that grant progression progress, and if a player continues to leave games, then this suspension can increase to 30 minutes.

When a teammate leaves an Overwatch 2 PvP match to immediately queue up for another game, it can be disruptive to the remaining teammates.

Although a backfill player can replace the leaver, that player begins with no ultimate charge. This further makes the Overwatch 2 experience less enjoyable, according to Blizzard's official announcement.

In the past, when a player left too many matches, they would receive a warning before accepting 75% less Battle Pass XP.

Overwatch 2 leaver penalty in competitive

In terms of the leaver penalty for competitive game modes, they begin with a 15-minute suspension. This penalty time increases with every leaver violation and can result in getting suspended from competitive Overwatch 2 for the remaining season.

Outside of competitive Overwatch 2, Blizzard stated that they understand how players may need to leave a match for reasons beyond their own control. Examples include parenting, technical issues, and wanting to team up with a group of friends instead.

"Leaving on such occasions is generally okay because you will not likely disrupt the next match you queue for," Blizzard explained.
