What’s next for Overwatch 2’s story and lore? The in-game story feature currently has five new placeholders. Here’s what we know so far.
Ever since its launch in 2016, the Overwatch franchise has released a lot of character lore and stories. That tradition continued with the official launch of Overwatch 2 in 2023. Over time, new heroes such as Ramattra, Lifeweaver, Illari, Hazard, Wuyang, Freja, and Vendetta have each had their moment in the spotlight. Now, with the fairly recent in-game story feature, Overwatch 2 appears to be teasing five new content pieces. Read on for what we know so far plus Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller's thoughts on the future of Overwatch 2's lore.

Overwatch 2 teases new stories and lore
According to the in-game story feature, there are currently five new placeholders with text that states, "Coming Soon." These placeholders are positioned right after Vendetta's "A New Empire" comic.

The entries that appear before Vendetta's comic are arranged in order from past to present as well. This may suggest that whatever comes after Vendetta's comic could move Overwatch 2's story forward.

The Overwatch 2 story so far
In terms of the recent Overwatch 2 story, Vendetta's "A New Empire" comic revealed that she was born into power as the daughter of Talon member Antonio Bartalotti. However, Blackwatch killed her father and Talon stole her inheritance. Vendetta then became a gladiator in the Colosseo. There, she earned wealth and allies. She later expanded her influence in high society while targeting Talon's leadership.
Meanwhile, the "Reconciliation" comic featured Null Sector leader Ramattra's reunion with Zenyatta. Sojourn's "Breaking News" lore drop then reported on the retreat of Null Sector's forces.
Other media in Overwatch 2's story feature are character introductions for Wuyang and Freja, who entered the game as playable heroes prior to Vendetta's release.
What's next for Overwatch 2's lore and story?
In an exclusive interview with esports.gg, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller shared his thoughts on the future of Overwatch 2's storytelling. For more context, this part of the interview was about Vendetta and her ties to Blackwatch, Talon, and the rest of the game's universe.
While there are no plans to revisit Retribution in the game anytime soon, Keller said he appreciates the callback to that mission and its connection to Vendetta. He added that the team would like to continue tying new heroes into existing lore and using them to push the lore forward in new directions.
"We don't have a plan to go back to Retribution or have something like that in the game anytime soon, But I love the callback to that mission, too, because there is that connection to Vendetta. And that's one of the things that I'm personally most excited about for this hero -- is how connected to the rest of the world she is and the lore. Because it's not just her father, it was the Blackwatch heroes that were on that mission," Keller said.
He continued, "It's now the rest of Talon that she's connected with. So I think it was really fun to develop a hero that was that connected. And Jude obviously did a lot of work there. And when I look to the future, I think that this is probably something that we'd like to be doing more of -- is as we introduce new heroes to the game -- to have them connected to either the world and the existing lore we have or using them to push it forward in new directions."
