Mortal Kombat 1 story
In a livestream, Boon revealed that the Mortal Kombat 1 narrative will include the origin stories of its characters. The game's announcement trailer also hinted at this story-focused take.
"Normally, we're really telling the intense fight ending with a fatality. And this one is a lot more story-focused," Boon said. "It's giving you an idea of this — all the characters in their new relationships, their new reality. You see a lot of origin stuff of how characters came to be. That's going to be a really cool part of our story."
Boon also noted that while part of the trailer established this, at the very end of the day, this is a Mortal Kombat game. Therefore, the trailer ended in a way that's classically brutal.
"There's fatalities, of course — because it's Mortal Kombat. But I love this new story presentation that we're giving," Boon said.

Why is it called Mortal Kombat 1?
According to Boon, Mortal Kombat 1 will be the beginning of a universe. Namely, Liu Kang's universe. This means it will not be a continuation of Mortal Kombat 11. Rather, it will be in a new timeline. The characters will have different roles and relationships with each other as well.
"This is really an 'at the beginning of a universe,' in a sense," Boon explained. "And it is not a continuation of the Mortal Kombat 11 story. And the characters have completely different roles in this new timeline. And we really wanted to kind of punctuate that and really, really emphasize that with our title."
Boon then reiterated that the game will be a brand-new beginning. That's the reason for Mortal Kombat 1's namesake. Players will witness characters being reintroduced in their new roles and relationships with each other.
It's Liu Kang's world, and we're just living in it
While Scorpion and Sub-Zero have always been two of the most recognizable characters in the franchise, they're not the ones featured in the key art. Instead, it's Liu Kang this time around.
"Because this is Liu Kang's universe, we really wanted to mix things up there," Boon revealed. "The color scheme in our key art is different. Liu Kang — it's the first time we've really kind of featured him up in front, and so again, this is all about a whole new Mortal Kombat. And I do think that Liu Kang is a great face to put up front to just really punctuate that this is a brand-new Mortal Kombat. It's not just a continuation of the last one."
