Team Heretics acquires Misfits LEC slot and will join LEC in 2023

Misfits set to leave the LEC and LFL after five years of partnership with Riot.

Team Heretics has announced its acquisition of Misfits Gaming's LEC slot after the end of the 2022 season. The Spanish organisation will replace Misfits for the 2023 LEC season, and become the second ERL team after BDS to buy a slot in recent times.

Misfits have been a part of the LEC for five years and qualified for the World Championship in 2017. The acquisition will take effect in the upcoming season with the Misfits Gaming Group remaining a minority partner in the team. The Group decided to leave the League as part of its larger strategy to invest more in creators alongside esports.

It’s bittersweet to know that our mission to diversify means that we cannot be in all places at once and we’re sad to say so long to the loving camaraderie and competitiveness of the LEC

Everything to know about Team Heretics

Team Heretics are one of the most famous esports organizations in Spain with titles in different games like FIFA and Valorant. The organization also has teams spread across different leagues. They entered the scene in 2016 and went on to acquire an LVP superliga spot from Cream Real Betis at the end of 2021.

Heretics finished eight in the spring season of the 2022 LVP SL and failed to make playoffs. However, they've turned things around in the summer with a first-place finish and an automatic qualification for the upcoming EU Masters. The organization will begin the transition to the LEC after the 2022 summer playoffs is over.

Team Heretics is looking to push even more boundaries and become a powerhouse in the LEC. Reigning from one of the biggest Spanish esports competitions, the LVP SuperLiga, we’re excited to see what the future holds for them.

According to Riot Games, Team Heretics went through an extensive selection process led by the Misfits Gaming Group. The Group made the final decision on selling its slot to Heretics following Riot's approval. However, all the proceeds from the sale of the slot will go to Misfits alone.

What happens to Misfits Players and Academy

Following the acquisition, all Misfits players are still under contract with the organization until the end of the season. This means that there will be no change in this until the sale takes effect in November.

Additionally, Misfits has also decided to leave the LFL at the end of the 2022 season. So, the organization will not have any active League of Legends teams for the time being. However, they will remain in Overwatch, Call of Duty League and maintain a presence in Riot Games VALORANT.

Misfits are currently tied for sixth place in the LEC; and will hope to clinch a playoffs spot for the last time as a LEC team.
