Suddenly, the head-to-head record between these teams is not that one-sided. It’s the match for being crowned as the best League of Legends esports team in Europe!

It is certainly not surprising to see these two teams playing in the grand final of LEC Summer 2024. G2 Esports and Fnatic regularly reach the top and then represent the region at the League of Legends international event.

But this time, the status of one as a favorite and the other as a constant runner-up has changed! Fnatic reached the match via the upper bracket. G2 had to make a short curve to the lower bracket — and it was Fnatic who sent them there.

Game 1

Fnatic thoroughly worked on scaling in the beginning of game 1, and they got a nice kill and gold advantage. It disappeared after a massive team fight near Baron — G2 won it, secured the objective, and started pressuring their opponents. It finished with a seemingly good fight for Fnatic, which turned out to be disastrous for them. G2 killed everyone, one after another, and then they quickly destroyed the Nexus. G2 Esports got one point in the match score.

Game 2

Once again, Fnatic had a great early game. And again, they couldn’t finish it properly. With a decent gold lead, they made a few mistakes, even on the execution level. G2 used this opportunity to get buffed with Baron and pressure the base. G2 Esports reached a match and a tournament point in the grand final of LEC Summer 2024.

Game 3

The script of two previous games was replayed here. Fnatic built a really good advantage in the beginning. But around minute 20, G2 found an opportunity and used the opponents’ mistake to recover. After some impressive team fights, G2 Esports won the match and the LEC Summer 2024 split.

“It feels good, especially after last week. Going against Fnatic again; winning this time around. 3:0 — maybe not the cleanest, but it’s 3:0 nevertheless, so we have it.”

Caps

“I’m also very happy. I feel this is probably our worst split so far. I’m really happy that we came back.”

Head-to-head between G2 Esports and Fnatic

There is no doubt that G2 Esports has a good chance against Fnatic. This is so even despite their loss to this exact opponent in the LEC Summer 2024 upper-bracket final. The head-to-head record strongly supports this conclusion, and it will be difficult for Fnatic to change such a mood in the community.

G2 defeated Fnatic in the playoffs of a few recent LEC splits:

  • LEC Finals 2023 — in the grand final
  • LEC Winter 2024 — in the upper-bracket semifinal
  • LEC Spring 2024 — in the upper-bracket semifinal and the grand final

It is also interesting to take a look at the progress of these teams on the international League of Legends esports scene.

  • G2 Esports were 3rd-4th at the Esports World Cup 2024 and 4th at the MSI 2024
  • Fnatic were 5th-8th at the Esports World Cup 2024 and 7th-8th at the MSI 2024

Nothing from the stats above matters on the actual Summoner's Rift, though. Esports is brilliantly unpredictable, and we can expect full commitment from both teams.

If G2 proves their status, it’s great for the viewers. If Fnatic breaks the head-to-head record, it’s again great for the community. This tension makes the match only more spectacular.
