The top-level international LoL esports is often about the competition between Korean and Chinese teams. It’s nicely reflected even in the Swiss Stage of the World Championship 2025. Gen.G and Top Esports continued this rivalry in their advancement match.

These teams have a nice experience facing each other at the high-stakes League of Legends events. The current match doesn’t feature the intensity of the EWC 2024 quarterfinal or MSI 2024 semifinals. Still, GEN and TES certainly wanted to hit the final brackets of LoL Worlds 2025 as quickly as possible. The losers will have another chance in Round 5, but with such fish as T1 and BLG in the pool, it’s unlikely to be an easy challenge.

Gen.G and Top Esports lost once at the Swiss Stage. Anyone's Legend, from China, defeated Gen.G and put them into the 1:1 group. Top Esports lost their advancement chance after their loss to KT Rolster, from Korea.

Prior to this match in Round 4, one Chinese and two Korean teams advanced to the LoL Worlds 2025 Playoffs. Korea can receive an early presence advantage. China hopes to equalize this aspect. This adds an interesting layer of intrigue in the GEN vs TES fight.

Match recap

Gen.G overplayed Top Esports with their objective fights. They broke Game 1 with a tricky Rift Herald approach, so the opponents could not even dream of recovering. TES battled pretty successfully in Game 2, delivering big trades. Still, they got demolished again after GEN went for Baron and aced twice.

Not only did Gen.G esports win this match to secure their spot in the quarterfinals, but they also revealed the level of their current strength. It feels pretty sufficient for the Championship finals!

Game 1

The game started with a series of close fights and spectacular exchanges, but then, it quickly escalated towards full domination of Gen.G.

Top Esports earned the First Blood thanks to their gank on Mid. Even the tankiness of Braum couldn’t help. Gen.G responded with a kill on Bot, where TES miscalculated their aggression. GEN dived on Top to kill 369. TES took the first Dragon.

These trades were over around Voidgrus. Kiin used tunnels of Rek'Sai to escape death, and that flipped the team fight in favor of Gen.G.

The next step was a brilliant plan with Rift Herald. Ruler distracted opponents with activity on Mid. His teammates secured the objective and used it to destroy one tower, kill four TES players, and take down the second turret.

Top Esports hoped to fight after GEN secured Atakhan, and they all died there. After another Ace, Gen.G just went for the Nexus, without even waiting for Baron’s spawn.

This play was quite a statement from GEN in the match versus TES and at LoL World 2025 in general.

Game 2

Top Esports managed to find some good team fights in the later part of this game, but it still ended up with two brilliant Aces by Gen.G.

Chovy showed his skills on Yone to start an early advantage for GEN. He was very low on health after strikes from Creme. That did not stop him from attacking the direct opponent and killing him with the help of Canyon.

TES pulled out their dives on Top to keep the situation even, and that worked quite well. Even when Gen.G enjoyed big achievements, they quickly received proper responses.

Big trades continued for a while, and they were stopped by Gen.G after Baron spawned. The Korean players killed all the opponents to take the Baron buff, and then they did the same around the Dragon Soul. Actually, GEN didn’t even need that last objective to destroy the Nexus and win this match over TES at LoL Worlds 2025.

The favorites and the upset potential

Gen.G has been dominating on the Korean LoL scene for the past two years and beyond. This tells a lot about the power of the team. Also, Gen.G has claimed two MSI titles for this period and was in the top 4 of Worlds 2024.

Top Esports have been shaky on the regional scene and have not achieved international tournament wins. However, this team managed to upset Gen.G in a pretty important match.

Despite that match, Gen.G have a positive head-to-head record to prove their status as the favorites.

  • Gen.G defeated TES at Worlds 2024, in the Swiss stage, and at MSI 2024, in the semifinal.

The final round of LoL Worlds 2025 Swiss stage is on Oct. 25. Korean and Chinese teams remain the favorites to advance to the Playoffs, but we sure are open to surprises. G2 managed to advance to the final brackets for the first time since 2020.
