G2 Caps chats with esports.gg during the LEC 2024 Summer Playoffs.

Esports.gg sat down with G2 Esports' dynastic mid lane Rasmus "Caps" Winther after his team's 2-0 defeat of BDS to chat about the state of the game, changes to come, and who he wants to see in Arcane Season 3.

G2 Esports had one tough week in the LEC Summer Split, with a 0-2 record in the first week of play after returning from the Mid-Season Invitational. Since then, the four-time LEC champions have been back in their usual form, dominating the competition in their way in a superheated run for another trophy. Mid laner G2 Caps took the time to chat with esports.gg as the next step of playoffs looms.

G2 Caps misses pre-midseason meta

Esports.gg: You just had a pretty convincing series against BDS, even if the second game started out pretty rocky. How are you feeling coming off the series, and how do you feel about the team's playoffs run?

Rasmus "Caps" Winther: I’m definitely, I think, pretty happy with the series. It was some of our better games this split. Definitely some things still to clean up. It definitely felt like we were in control for the majority of the games.

For the split itself, I think we had a very tough start. I think we didn’t really know what to do with the meta at the beginning. I also think I wasn’t playing very well in the first weeks, so we had a slow start. I definitely think we have been getting better and better. I think right now we are quite comfortable, so yeah. I’m confident going into the last part of the playoffs. I definitely think we can do even better than we did today.

We've spoken to a lot of players in NA and EU who feel like the meta post-midseason updates have been really volatile. How do you feel about the meta post-midseason? Do you feel that volatility that others are experiencing?

Caps: I mean, yeah, definitely a lot of new changes coming into the split. A lot of it was especially about the AP junglers, and now there’s a lot of AD carries mid. I think it was fine. I’m not the biggest fan because the meta before it I enjoyed. The MSI and Spring/Winter meta I enjoyed more for mid lane because there was like a variety of champions. I think you saw, even at MSI, I was playing Tristana and lots of people were playing Corki. But there were a lot of other champions as well: A-Sol, Azir, Taliyah, some LeBlanc. There were a lot of different champions. Now, it’s a bit more narrow in terms of what gets picked.

So, for mid lane, I think it’s for sure not as many champions. But on the flipside, for jungler, there’s a lot of AP junglers being played. So I can see the variety coming in there. But they do feel a bit too strong. Maybe because they are definitely the strongest. It looks like it, at least. It’s still fun to play a lot of AD carries. I played Tristana even at MSI, so the fact that she’s like a first pick now — I’m happy to play, right? Now coming in with Lucian and Ezreal the other day, it seems like the other AD carries can be a lot of fun. I think it’s a bit more limited in some sense.

Speaking of enjoying a diversity of champions, we've been polling pro players and coaches on their opinions on the new international event featuring Fearless Draft. Do you have any thoughts on Fearless Draft as a format?

Caps: I don’t really have that many opinions, I think, because I haven’t really looked into Fearless Draft too much. It’s ‘you can’t play something you already played,’ right? I like playing a lot of different champions, so it sounds like a lot of fun. But it also sounds like the drafting could be quite complex, so definitely something you’ll have to get used to.

It sounds like it will be fun to try out, but I haven’t really put myself too much into it. I haven’t tried to do a mock draft of what would happen in these future games. But at the same time, if it’s an excuse to play some newer champions, that could be fun.

We asked Dylan this question recently, but if you could choose which region Arcane or Fortiche will visit after Arcane Season 2, which region would you choose? And if you could choose one champion to get screen time in this imaginary season, who would it be?

Caps: Hmm. That’s a hard one. I feel like there’s a lot of regions that could be quite cool. I’m trying to think of a champion because there’s a lot of cool stories. But I feel like redoing the stories that are already quite cool might not be the best. Maybe somebody who doesn’t have as much lore, or at least that I’m not familiar with. I could see, maybe, an Ezreal story where he travels around and explores. So maybe not a specific place, but, you know, following Ezreal around. Maybe he gets some ancient artifacts, stuff like that. I think that could be pretty cool.

My region that I would have to pick… I’m not sure. I think I’d go for Noxus, maybe? My favorite champion is probably LeBlanc, so I'd love getting some LeBlanc action. I don’t know if she’d work as a main character because she’s more, like, in the shadows. But I think having her as the main villain is cool, you know? You see her a few times every episode like (pretends to lean out from behind a curtain) crawling behind. She’s tricking people a lot, so maybe she’s actually one of the characters we’ve seen the whole time, but she’s transformed. I think that would be kinda cool, but we’ll see.

Finally, any last words for G2 fans as you look ahead to playoffs and your next matches?

Caps: Big thanks to all the G2 fans supporting us. We’re met with a lot of G2 fans [at the meet and greets] these days, so that was definitely nice to see. We’re definitely feeling confident. Keep supporting us. It definitely helps a lot — especially when we were at the EWC. There were a lot of people cheering for us, and it helped us a lot when we were struggling a bit more — to just regain some energy. I definitely think we’re in good shape, so let’s see what we can do in the playoffs.
