Will you fight for or against Deathwing in Hearthstone's Cataclysm expansion?

The latest Hearthstone expansion, Cataclysm, is now live with 135 new cards, the Herald plus Shatter keywords, and the return of the Colossal mechanic. Here’s everything you need to know about the new Hearthstone expansion.

Hearthstone Cataclysm release date

The Cataclysm expansion in Hearthstone went live on March 17. In addition to the Herald, Shatter, and Colossal keywords, this expansion features Deathwing, Worldbreaker as a hero card.

Prior to Cataclysm’s release date, invited content creators got to test out some decks during a theorycrafting event. Later, players also had the option to participate in the pre-release Tavern Brawl. Will the decks from these past events hold up? Only time will tell.

Hearthstone gets Deathwing hero card

Complete with its own flashy visual effects, the Deathwing, Worldbreaker hero card lets you become Deathwing himself. This transformation includes a special Battlecry that lets you choose a Cataclysm to unleash, and this can be upgraded by activating the Herald keyword. As for the card’s hero power, it’s Ruthless. For two mana, it grants you five attack during your turn.

Colossal minions return to Hearthstone

In terms of Colossal minions, each Hearthstone class gets one in this expansion. However, the six classes that align with Deathwing himself do get to use the Herald keyword and make the most out of their Colossals. These classes are Demon Hunter, Death Knight, Rogue, Shaman, Warrior, and Warlock.

As a quick refresher, Colossal minions expand into multiple cards on the board, and each one of these “appendages” has its own ability. An example of a Colossal minion is Arisen Onyxia for the Death Knight class.

Herald keyword in Hearthstone explained

Speaking of the Herald keyword, it lets you summon a minion from your Colossal’s army. This minion has the same ability as the Colossal’s appendage. Blizzard Entertainment provided more information about how the Herald keyword works below as well.

  • Use Herald twice to double the power of your Colossal and its appendages
  • Use it two more times to double it again and reach maximum devastation
  • Deathwing works in a similar way. Herald twice to unleash two Cataclysms. Herald four times to use all four of Deathwing’s world‑breaking abilities!

Shatter keyword in Hearthstone explained

As for the Shatter keyword, it features the five Hearthstone classes fighting against Deathwing. These pertain to Mage, Hunter, Paladin, Priest, and Druid. Cards with the Shatter keyword break into two spells that are added to the opposite ends of your hand. These spells can be used on their own. However, if they end up beside each other, then they recombine into a single card with two effects.
