Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are the newest set of mainline Pokemon games on the horizon. This time players will be exploring the Paldea region. This region is based on Spain and is set to completely change up the formula. The game mechanics that have been announced seem to be merging previous mainline features with that of the ultra-successful Pokemon Legends: Arceus to refresh the series. Below we go over all the intresting details that have been announced about Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.

New Story Routes

One of the most interesting things about this new set of games is that they are open world. This is completely new as the mainline series has always been linear. There was a certain order to the gyms and towns you would visit. Scarlet and Violet, however, are going to let you take on the gyms in whichever order your heart desires.

Furthermore, there are two other story routes that you can choose to embark on. While we don't have a lot of details on these, they will pull away from the standard formula. We also see that the legendary Pokemon for this generation will act as your mounts, flying you through the sky and using surf to get you across bodies of water.

It seems that not only will you have free reign over where you travel to first, but the cover legendaries will likely become your companion much earlier on in the game. It's not clear whether you will be able to use them on your team right away or not.

Enhanced Co-op

Another huge improvement comes in the form of more co-op options. While trading and battling are still available, you will now be able to explore parts of the map with your friends. We do know that some parts of the game won't be co-op friendly. This will likely include story parts and gym battles. Outside of that, though, we already know that you can do Terastallize raids with friends.

New Region and Pokemon

Of course, the Paldea region includes a host of new Pokemon. While we haven't officially got to see many of the new creatures, the ones that have been shown have already worked their way into the hearts of fans. The starters you can choose from are as follows:

  • Fuecoco
  • Sprigatito
  • Quaxly

In addition, the Paldea region seems to have regional versions of Pokemon as well, as we have already seen a poison-type version of Whooper.

What Does Terastallize Mean

Like the games that came before Scarlet and Violet, the pair feature a gimmick to power your Pokemon up called Terastallize. This can be done to any Pokemon and changes their typing to their Tera Type. The Tera Type can change depending on the individual Pokemon, causing trainers to experiment with their team when using the ability to battle.

There are 18 Tera Types in all, and try to match their moves to their Tera Type to hit your opponents even harder. You will also need to obtain the Tera Orb in-game to use this ability and have it charged to Terastallize your Pokemon.
