Get ready for top tier visuals on the Switch 2.

Nintendo unveiled our biggest drop of Switch 2 information in a Nintendo Direct today (April 2), including some of the most anticipated details. This included answers to important questions about new features, release date price and of course if the Switch 2 can support 1080p, 1440p or even 4k and what frame rates will be supported.

Nintendo systems have always been somewhat out of step with competitors. The unique features and mechanics, plus a range of unique games, are always what makes a Nintendo system stand apart rather than being juiced with the latest and most powerful hardware.

So, here is everything announced today about the Switch 2 and its support for 4k, 1440p and 1080p.

The Switch 2 can support 4k resolution

There has been a lot of speculation and worry about what the Nintendo Switch 2 will support. Thankfully it was revealed today that games will be avaliable in upto 4k resolution when docked. This will also have a FPS of 60.

That is an incredibly strong showing from Nintendo and is very much in line with peoples expectations.

What resolutions does the Switch 2 support?

The Nintendo Switch 2 will support the following resolutions when docked:

  • 720p
  • 1080p
  • 1440p
  • 2160p (4k)

When in Handheld mode you will experience gameplay at 1080p, with a maximum refresh rate of up to 120fps. It has an improved display, which is 7.9 inches and has double the pixels of the original Nintendo Switch. While 4k resolution is only in docked mode for the Switch 2 1080p when handheld will still feel crisp, thanks to a very high refresh rate.

The Switch 2 can also support up to 120fps

Most excitingly is that the Switch 2 will support up to 120fps in handheld mode, providing super smooth gameplay. This is a huge leap from the previous Nintendo Switch and a really exciting reveal.

The frame rate of each game will be case by case, but this is a huge boost and will make things feel a lot better on this console. Poor graphics and frame rates on the Switch became more evident as the console aged, and the successor is a lot more powerful than some people expected.

Having both 4k support and 120fps support among the list of specs means the Switch 2 might be the most anticipated Nintendo system to date.
