Here is a look at Hytale Update 1, including the new content like dinosaurs, QoL improvements, performance upgrades, bug fixes, and more.

Update 1 of Hytale features a plethora of improvements and new content in the game. It was implemented on Jan. 17, a few days after its early access release. While most of the new content is bare bones, the developers have promised to polish it in the future. This update also addressed a lot of issues that players have reported. This includes performance, audio, and visual changes that can affect gameplay experience.

That said, let’s go over what the Hytale Update 1 brings to the table.

Hytale Update 1 Patch Notes

World & Environment

  • Added dinosaurs and other NPCs to populate the underground jungles. They currently use placeholder behaviours and are a work in progress.
  • Note: These new NPCs required a change to the environment in the biome, so you will need to generate new unexplored areas to see them.
  • Devastated Lands sewers now have proper atmospheric effects and creature spawns.
  • Areas beneath volcanoes now use volcanic environmental effects.
  • Fixed entity placements, textures, and interiors in Feran villages.
  • Removed an invisible filler block behind the bench in the Forgotten Temple.

Key takeaways

One of the things that players remembered pre-early access release of Hytale is that they were promised dinosaurs. However, when they visited the underground jungles, there were no signs of life inside. Update 1 adds NPC and the much-awaited dinosaurs in the game. However, the developers clarified that you can’t do anything with these dinosaurs yet.

One thing to keep in mind is that underground jungles you already visited will not generate any new NPCs and mobs. You will have to visit a new biome if you want to see the new content.

NPCs and creatures

  • Added knockback resistance to NPCs that previously did not have it.
  • Fire-themed NPCs and creatures should now be immune to fire damage. However, they'll still catch on fire for now.
  • Improvements on the Crystal Earth Golem's combat behavior and spin attack.
  • Skeletons should no longer take drowning damage.
  • Kweebecs should now be immune to the environmental damage caused by cactus and brambles.
  • Replaced Trork Shaman placeholder summon animation.
  • Added proper loot tables to Kweebecs and Trorks in the Whisperfrost Frontiers.
  • Livestock should no longer climb on top of the Chicken Coop.
  • Cautious wildlife predators, such as the Fox, should no longer engage players unless attacked.

Key takeaways

For the NPC and creature changes in Hytale Update 1, it’s mostly to make them consistent. For example, mobs that are themed around fire should be immune to fire-based attacks. Another one is that Skeletons cannot drown because they are undead. These changes should not affect the difficulty of the game. Rather, it will make NPCs and creatures more immersive.

Crafting, items and farming

Backpacks are now more accessible in the early game (Screenshot via esports.gg)

  • The Backpack and its upgrades are now easier to obtain: Base backpack now requires a Tier 1 Workbench (down from Tier 2).
  • Base backpack cost reduced to 8 Medium Leather (down from 16).
  • Upgrading the backpack for the first time now requires a Tier 2 Workbench (down from Tier 3).
  • Light, Medium, and Heavy Hide now take 10 fewer seconds to process into Leather.
  • Crafting benches can now pull materials from chests within 14 blocks horizontally (up from 7) and 6 blocks vertically (up from 4).
  • Processing benches now display item tooltips in the upgrade requirements panel.
  • All raw fruits and vegetables should now only grant Health Regen I. Cooking them grants additional benefits.
  • Dropped items should no longer get stuck on the side of blocks.
  • Torches and other handheld light sources can now be placed on the ground when equipped in the Utility Slot while wielding a pickaxe or a hatchet.
  • Pickaxes and hatchets are now only swung when using the primary action.
  • Corn now gives 1 Essence of Life instead of 4 when using the Farming Bench, as it was previously misconfigured, making it better than higher-tier crops.
  • Fully grown Cauliflower and Pumpkin no longer drop regular seeds when broken by hand or with any tool
  • Fully grown Eternal Crops no longer drop eternal seeds when broken by hand or with any tool
  • Wood Logs now display their respective "wood type."
  • Example: Oak Log will display "Hardwood" in It's Tooltip.
  • When a crafting recipe previously required a type of "Trunk," this is now displayed correctly as "Log" instead.
  • Example: "Hardwood Trunk" is displayed as "Hardwood Log" in the recipe requirements.
  • When a crafting recipe requires a specific Log Type (Such as Hardwood), the tooltip now displays which Trees can drop that type of Log
  • Example: "Softwood Log" will display "Banyan, Beech, and Aspen" in its tooltip.
  • Woodcutter's Block no longer displays as "Dev" item quality, and no longer has it's un-used processing bench interaction; it is now a decorative furniture block that can also be crafted in the Furniture Bench.

Key takeaways

There is a lot to unpack in this section of Hytale Update 1. However, the most notable change is the backpack crafting requirement. The required Workbench Tier is reduced from Tier 2 to the basic Tier 1. Additionally, it requires less leather to craft. This means you can easily get a backpack on your first day in the game.

The confusion between Tree Trunks and Log is now over. Wood materials like that are called Trunks, not Logs. There is also a small tooltip that you can check to see which trees you need to cut to get these types of logs.

Another useful improvement is that torches held in the left-hand slot can now be placed by right-clicking. Previously, this was not possible, forcing you to have a separate slot for placing toches in your right-hand slot.

As for mining, blocks will no longer get stuck on walls. This means you no longer need to waste tool durability just to open up space for these blocks to drop. They will drop naturally when you mine them.

Audio and visual Effects

  • The game now warns when launching pre-release versions or opening worlds from different versions.
  • The field of view while sprinting now has a limit of 160° to prevent hyper-drive effect.
  • Cancelling LAN server discovery now works correctly.
  • The interaction system now handles server lag spikes better.
  • Character Customization
  • New eye types: Cat Eye, Demonic Eyes, Goat Eye, Reptile Eye.
  • New mouth options: Large Mouth, Tiny Lips.
  • New hair color: Lavender.
  • Reworked Bangs hairstyle and brightened Dark Brown color.
  • Featherbound Hood is now correctly showing for the Supporter edition.

Key takeaways

This section of Update 1 addresses a lot of player concerns regarding the visuals and audio in Hytale. The sound of mining blocks with a pickaxe used to annoy players. Now, there are new effects when breaking ores, making the experience feel more satisfying and far less intrusive.

You can now sleep a bit earlier. Before the update, you couldn’t sleep until 9 p.m. in-game time. This means you will have to wait until it’s almost pitch dark, which can be annoying if you want to explore and avoid monsters that spawn in the night. With the new update, you can sleep as early as 7:40 p.m., just before sundown.

New customization options are also available for your character. You can check it out in the My Avatar option in the main menu. The developers are looking to add more cosmetics in future updates.

Combat and balance

  • Weapon attacks should now check for line of sight.
  • The regular Burn effect now generally deals less damage. Burn applied by lava remains unchanged.
  • Cactus and brambles now deal the Environmental damage type.
  • Commands andserver
  • Fixed argument order for teleport commands. /tp <player> <targetPlayer>
  • Give command now supports specifying item durability.
  • Whitelist and ban commands now support both online usernames and offline UUIDs.
  • The server now uses "Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time" congestion control for QUIC.
  • Improved authentication and session token error handling.

Key takeaways

This section of the update aims to improve the combat experience in the game as well as server management. Nothing significant to note, unless you are looking to host your own server for Hytale.
