Blizzard cancels Blizzcon 2021; announces global event in early 2022

Blizzard has canceled Blizzcon for the second row in a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. There will be a global event in early 2022.

Blizzard has scrapped its annual fan convention, Blizzcon 2021, as the realities of the coronavirus pandemic make it difficult to plan and organize an event of such scale. Instead, Blizzcon will return early in 2022 with an online show and smaller in-person gatherings.

Blizzcon is an annual gaming-focused fan convention that takes place every year at Anaheim Convention Center near Blizzard’s headquarters in Irvine, California. The convention brings together all of Blizzard’s vast library of games in one place. Fans and players converge at the location to express their love for “Blizzard’s multiple universes.” In addition to the convention, Blizzcon has also featured esports tournaments bringing together players from across the world.

Blizzard cancels Blizzcon 2021

This year, Blizzard has canceled Blizzcon 2021 in lieu of the ongoing pandemic. This is the second year in a row that Blizzcon has been canceled. However, Blizzard promises a shorter wait period this time around.

The ongoing complexities and uncertainties of the pandemic have impacted our ability to properly move forward on many of these fronts, and ultimately we’re now past the point where we’d be able to develop the kind of event we’d want to create for you in November.

When is the next Blizzcon?

We’re planning a global event for the early part of next year, combining an online show along the lines of our recent BlizzConline with smaller in-person gatherings. We’ll share more as our plans come together.

Just like this year, Blizzard is planning for an early-year Blizzcon. Blizzcon 2020 took place in February 2021 where the company provided updates on Diablo and World of Warcraft.

Blizzard recently revealed Overwatch 2 will feature a 5v5 lineup, a significant change to the game going forward. But the game developer has not announced the release dates or any more information about new maps in Overwatch 2.

The company will provide more information about the 2022 event in the future.
