Epic Games has extended Fortnite’s downtime following the v36.10 update on July 15.

Epic Games has returned from its annual summer vacation. However, Fortnite has taken a little vacation of its own following the game's most recent update. After downtime began on July 15, everything went according to plan, but Fortnite's servers never returned online.

The developers have since released a statement, explaining that they are working to resolve an issue. Unfortunately, that means Fortnite servers will remain offline until further notice.

UPDATE: Servers have returned online

As of 12:32 p.m. ET, the Fortnite servers are back online. You can now load into the game and experience the latest update.

When will Fortnite servers be back up?

Fortnite should have returned online early on July 15 following the usual downtime. However, Fortnite threw Epic Games a curveball as outlined in the X post above. Epic said, "We're extending downtime while we work to resolve an issue discovered during offline checks."

That means the game will remain offline until Epic resolves the issue at hand. As it stands, Fortnite servers have been offline for several hours, and Epic did not provide a timeframe for when players can expect to resume playing the game. This Fortnite downtime could last for at least the next few hours.

What exactly happened that led to Fortnite's extended downtime on July 15?

The reliable Fortnite resource known as Osirion theorized what may have happened with the July 15 update. In an X post, Osirion says the latest Fortnite update version number "went down instead of up," while adding that Epic Games had to rebuild the whole version the last time this happened.

That solution took the developers between roughly 12 and 24 hours, which is not a good sign if a similar situation were to unfold here. However, it's worth noting that Epic has neither confirmed nor denied that this is what's happening.

We may never understand what led to the extended downtime of v36.10, since Epic doesn't usually explain the origin of these issues. Regardless, the key takeaway is that this is abnormal for Fortnite. You can rest assured that Epic Games has much motivation to end the July 15 downtime.
