Fortnite joins the Olympics 2023 … as a shooting competition?

12 of the top FNCS pros will compete in a shooting competition at this summer’s Olympic Esports Series.

It's official — Fortnite Battle Royale has joined the upcoming Olympic Esports Series 2023. The competition, which goes down in Singapore this June, is set to host games such as dance, chess, sailing, and more. This same competition has made Fortnite Olympics a reality.

However, it's not the high-paced, pulsing-pounding Battle Royale or Zero Build mode that thousands enjoy worldwide. Instead, it will be a shooting competition designed in Creative Mode.

Sport shooting is the name of the game

In keeping up with Olympic traditions, the Olympic Esports Series 2023 has not committed to actual esports, i.e., DOTA 2, League of Legends, and Counter-Strike. The competition is more of a virtual version of the Olympic Games.

Fortnite in the Olympics will showcase the game's aiming and shooting mechanics via a Creative Map. This competition will emulate sport shooting—an actual Olympic contest.

"The competition will be an invitational event and involve 12 players from the Fortnite Champion Series. It will feature a special International Shooting Sport Federation Island created in Fortnite, which will be designed to reflect sport shooting competition. Players will be tested on their target aiming accuracy, just as sport shooters would in competition."

Ideally, Fortnite's Olympic debut would display what makes the game stand out, such as the Storm, 100-player fields, and an emphasis on building or positioning. What we have seems to be a consolation.

The silver lining of Fortnite in the Olympics

While all of what makes Fortnite unique will not be on display, there's undoubtedly a silver lining. Fortnite in the Olympics is a significant step to get more eyes on what many feel is a unique esports experience.

Aiming and shooting are undoubtedly two of the most critical aspects of Fortnite. Furthermore, including Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS) players ensures the highest level of competition will occur. Let's not forget how excellent the FNCS All-Star Showdown was back in 2021.

Hopefully, the Fortnite Olympic sport shooting tournament will create more opportunities. It may not be perfect, but Fortnite in the Olympics is not something many thought would happen back in 2017.

The Olympic Esports Series 2023 will occur in Singapore from June 22 to June 25.
