Man City are partnering with Gen.G to further expand their reach into esports!

Korean esports organization Gen.G has announced a partnership with the English Premier League football team Manchester City F.C.. As revealed on Twitter, the two organizations unveiled a collaboration under the title "GEN CITY" which bring Man City further into the esports sphere and expands Gen.G's reach.

Originating from Seoul, South Korea, but with offices in LA and Shanghai, Gen.G is a truly global and successful esports organization. With teams playing across a range of esports titles, including League of Legends and VALORANT, Gen.G has seen plenty of success, winning the Summer 2022 split and finished second in Spring 2023. Outside of these major success, Gen.G finished fourth at MSI 2023 and also has an Academy which educates people on esports and supporting those attempting to start a career as a player.

Across the globe is Manchester City, a English Premier League football team. Having recently celebrated a victory over local rivals Manchester United, in the heated Manchester Derby, the side is also coming off the back of an historic treble winning season, which saw them hoist the EPL trophy, The FA Cup and the one trophy that had alluded them - the UEFA Champions League. Suffice to say, Manchester City is used to success.

In recent years Man City has expanded into esports, having started with FIFA and Fortnite, and an ongoing partnership with FaZe Clan. Their partnership with Gen.G is their latest move in a wider esports strategy.

A new partnership based on champions recognizing champions

Within the original Twitter announcement, the two organizations promised to bring "an exciting new collaboration between esports and sports." As both companies are well respected in their own right, the Twitter announcement from Man City was titled "Champs recognize champs." A link to an article explaining the details of this partnership was also provided Man City, wherein they set out their goals for this partnership.

As part of this announcement is the news that Man City FC will be visiting Seoul, South Korea in July 2023 ahead of the preparation for the next season. This was also hinted at via Gen.G's announcement post which teased the idea of collaboration content and in-person events.

Two legends coming together

Representatives from both companies spoke about this partnership as part of the announcement with Gen.G CEO, Arnold Hur, explaining that his organization had been looking for a top sports team to partner with:

"We are excited to work with the newly crowned champions Manchester City under the banner of GEN CITY. We are incredibly excited about this partnership both for our competitive and educational teams and hope to build upon this collaboration in the future"

Meanwhile, the Man City media director, Gavin Johnson, explained his excitement about the partnership saying this was "another fantastic addition to the Club’s growing involvement in the eSports space which will further increase our presence within South Korea and the region."
