The 2023 Asian Games – also called the Hangzhou 2022 – will field eight esports titles. Read here for more details!

The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, returns in 2023 after it was delayed last year due to COVID-19. This sports event which happens every four years, gathers athletes from multi-continents to grab medals for their represented countries. But what makes this year special is it features seven esports titles - which counts for the medal tally - for the first time in history.

The Asian Games has included esports in its previous iteration, however, it was only as a demonstration sport. This means that while countries could participate in esports, the medals do not count towards the country's overall tally.

As the massive world of gaming and esports arrives in the Asian Games, many also expect it to bring a spike in viewership. This is apparent as esports is the only category in Asian Games that has a lottery-based system to purchase tickets.

Asian Games itself is already colossal with this year seeing the biggest pool of athletes in history. Over 12,000 athletes across 45 countries will participate in this sports event with 31 countries sending representatives in esports.

The host country, China, is the biggest superpower in this event. Many expect the country to dominate most of the sports including esports.
