Materialists bring rom-coms back to theaters with a love triangle featuring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal.

Many cinema fans have been requesting a quality romantic comedy for quite some time. Despite being a popular genre, many fans express on social media that the latest romcoms are poorly made, often prioritizing appearances over the genuine development of romance. However, this doesn't indicate that the genre is dead. "Materialists" might be a good candidate to bring the "love back" with many familiar faces and a funny plot.

Materialists (2025)

This is an upcoming movie from A24 Studio, directed by Celine Song, who also directed Past Lives (2024). Past Lives earned her nominations for the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. The movie stars Dakota Johnson (Lucy), Chris Evans (John), and Pedro Pascal (Randy). The movie is already considered one of the most anticipated titles of this year.

In the rom-com, we will also see Zoë Winters, Marin Ireland, Dasha Nekrasova, Louisa Jacobson, Sawyer Spielberg, and Eddie Cahill.

Plot

Lucy is an expert in matchmaking, meaning she selects the best candidates for romantic relationships. Her success rate is high, but her own love life is not as fulfilling. Love can be complicated, and Lucy finds herself caught in a complex love triangle involving John, an old friend, and Randy, a wealthy and kind-hearted man. Choosing between both options will take Lucy on a challenging journey through her emotions and thoughts.

From the trailer, we can expect lots of chemistry between the characters, but also social criticism to the high criteria people put into each other in terms of relationships.

When does the movie come out?

The movie comes out on June 13 in the United States. There is still no confirmation about the international release. You can check out the first trailer here.
