Everything we know about Five Nights at Freddy’s 2: Release date, plot, and more

Freddy and the gang will be back for seconds

After the massive success of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie in late 2023, fans have been clamoring for any news regarding a sequel. While we do know that a follow up movie is in fact in the works, details have been sparse. Here’s everything we know about Five Nights at Freddy's 2.

Is Five Nights at Freddy's 2 happening?

We can confidently say that the FNAF 2 movie is happening. This comes as no surprise as the first movie became Blumhouse Studios best performing movie ever in the box office, topping films like Get Out, Halloween (2018), and The Purge.

Josh Hutcherson, the sleepy security guard and star of the first film, also confirmed that a sequel is in the works. In an interview with Variety, Hutcherson said “I know they’re in the process right now of nailing down the story, and they want to get going as soon as possible.”

When is the FNAF sequel coming out?

Unfortunately, there’s no news on when exactly the sequel will release. However, we do know that the sequel will start shooting in July, 2024, according to the Film & Television Industry Alliance. The cast and crew has not yet confirmed this information, but it seems credible based on the success of the first film and Hutcherson’s comments on the sequel. However, rumors have also circulated that the filming will be delayed to Fall of 2024.

If the July production date is correct, then we could see Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 as early as 2025. No matter when the production begins, it seems likely that the movie will be out before or around Halloween of 2025.

What will Five Nights at Freddy's be about?

Though we have no confirmed information about plot details, fans can assume that the movie sequel will follow the plot of the original Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 game.

Emma Tammi, the director of the first film, did hint that any possible sequel would "probably" follow the second FNAF game. Speaking to Variety, she said:

"We're definitely excited to keep making more movies in this world, should we be lucky enough to do that. This one was tied into the first game, and we would probably focus on tying the second one into the second game, and so on and so forth. But anything could happen."

Five Nights at Freddy’s lore is incredibly messy, obviously. It’s more than likely that the movie will take creative liberties to clarify the plot of the second game. FNAF 2 is a prequel to the first game, as it takes place in 1987 according to paychecks seen in-game. It will be interesting to see how the film balances the prequel aspect of the game with the returning cast of the first film.

Is the cast returning for Five Nights at Freddy's 2?

A fair portion of the actors from the first film will be reprising their roles for the sequel. Matthew Lillard, the villianous William Afton, previously confirmed his signing of a three-film contract for FNAF.

Josh Hutcherson's earlier comments with Variety seemingly confirm his return to the sequel. Alongside him is Piper Rubio, who plays little sister Abby, and who was confirmed to return in an industry announcement.

We don't know yet if Elizabeth Lail, who plays Vanessa, will return. Her characters fate was left up in the air by the end of the first film.

As for the true stars of the show, the suit performers for Freddy Fazbear (Kevin Foster), Bonnie (Jade Kindar-Martin), Chica (Jessica Weiss), and Foxy (Roger Joseph Manning Jr.) will likely reprise their roles.

We also know that director Emma Tammi will be returning and that Scott Cawthon will be returning as a writer. Hopefully we'll also see Markiplier in the sequel, since he missed out on being in the first film due to scheduling issues.
